'Guru Nanak Jayanti', the birthday of Guru Nanak, the founder of 'guru nanak,indian religions,indian saints,sikhism,spiritual guru' is being celebrated with religious fervour and zeal across India.

The anniversaries of Sikh Gurus are masters are called 'Gurpurabs' and are celebrated by devout Sikhs. Gurpurabs mark the culmination of Prabhat Pheris which are the early morning processions that start from the Gurudwaras and proceed to the localities singing sacred hyms called the 'Shabads'.

The celebration that goes on for three days also include the Akhand path which is the reading of the 'Guru Granth Sahib' ceaselessly from beginning to end without a break. On the day of the occasion, the Guru Granth Sahib is also carried on a float decked with flowers, in a procession through out the village or the city.

Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh greeted the nation on the occasion.

In the words of Ansari, Guru Nanak Devji was an apostle of universal love, piety and spiritual faith. His divine teachings is a sure guidance on the path of social harmony and unity.

Dr. Singh while delivering his message said that the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, was of peace and unity are very relevant in today's world.

"A Society without discrimination and distinction - the vision of Guru Nanakji is the vision towards which we should strive," he added.
