Patient gets back vision through 'Keratoprosthesis'
A rare ophthalmic surgery was performed on a 27-year-old teacher to restore his vision at an Eye hospital here.
Talking to UNI here, Sankara Eye hospital ophthalmologist Dr K J Reddy said the hospital had developed a new technique called 'Keratoprosthesis,' with which the patient Rashid (27), a madarassa teacher hailing from Kannur in Kerala, got back his vision.
Under Keratoprosthesis, an artificial cornea is placed in the eye instead of human cornea. A polymethyl methaacrylate, a type of plastic along with a titanium metal skirt is integrated into the eye, he said.
Dr Reddy said 'Keratoprosthesis' was opted for the patient, because the usual cornea transplantation procedure repeatedly failed for him.
Rashid had undergone cornea transplantation procdure several times, before he was refferred to this hospital, he added.
