6 Outdated Rules To Break When Decorating Compact Spaces
The white walls, selective furniture pieces, and plain surfaces make a small room appear usual and boring. A compact space or area in your home deserves better than the less-is-more decor rule.
What's more? You don't require extra square footage to form a space that is defined with a definite style and decor either! We have listed some common outdated rules that you can break or discard when decorating any small-sized room:

Small Scale Furniture
A small room needn't require small size furniture only. You can opt for a single medium or large-scale furniture to add an appeal to the small space. For example, a sectional couch and additional seating i.e. accent chair or ottoman can make an ideal choice in a compact living room!
Less Is More
It is not necessary to design and decorate a small size room with few curated objects only. You can rule out the outdated 'less is more' decor rule with the 'more is more' one! You can decorate the chosen space in a bohemian, eclectic, or maximalist style that allows for a collective decor outlook. You can include different types of seating, artworks, textiles, furnishings, and decor objects and create a cosy little space that defines your style and personality.
White or Neutral Walls
Think beyond the white or neutral-tone walls to give a small room a special look and feel. You can instead define the walls with dark paint which can infuse an architectural interest to a small space and complement the same with contrast or lighter shade furniture, soft furnishings, and decor objects.

Light Colour Ceiling
Think beyond painting the ceiling in a light colour to give any small area or zone appear bigger and spacious. Why not select a darker colour to paint the ceilings? It can add depth to small bright spaces with neutral or white walls. You can opt for a satin or semi-gloss paint that helps reflect light and add an illusion of a bigger space.
Adding Just One Area Rug
You must add a rug to anchor the chosen compact room but there is no rigid rule that you should stick to one rug only. You can add a layered look with one medium or bigger rug and add a smaller rug or runner over it. It will help add focus to such textured furnishings instead of the size of the chosen room or area. Plus, it will provide you with additional warmth and drama!
Recessed Lights Only
Agreed that recessed or hanging lights are ideal to include in smaller rooms since they do not occupy the floor space, but that doesn't mean you should avoid adding other light fixtures. Any room including big or small needs to feature a layered lighting design. It includes adding ambient lights with downlights or recessed lights, task lights with a table lamp or floor lamp and accent lights with either chandelier or pendant lights.
