Onam 2023: How To Wash Your Kerala Saree At Home?
Onam is just around the corner, and it's time to bring out those gorgeous Kerala sarees that add an elegant touch to your festive celebrations.
But wait, are you unsure about how to clean and care for your precious set-mundu/Kerala sarees? Don't worry, we've got you covered! In this article, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of washing your Kerala saree at home!

How To Wash Your Kerala Saree At Home?
Step 1: Sorting:
- Separate your sarees based on their fabric and colour.
- Check for any stains or spots that need special attention.
- Keep mild detergent, lukewarm water, and a soft brush ready.
Step 2: Gentle Hand Wash:
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
- Gently immerse the saree into the water, letting it soak for about 15 minutes.
- Gently rub the stained areas with a soft brush or your fingers. Avoid vigorous scrubbing to prevent damage.
- Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean water.
- Rinse the saree thoroughly until all the detergent is removed.
Step 3: Drying:
- Do not wring the saree to remove excess water. Instead, gently squeeze the water out by pressing the fabric between two clean towels.
- Hang the saree on a plastic hanger or a cotton rope in a shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can fade colours.
Step 4: Ironing and Storage:
- Iron the saree on a low heat setting while it's slightly damp. Place a thin cloth over the saree to prevent direct contact with the iron.
- Fold the saree neatly and store it in a clean, dry place. You can use muslin cloth or butter paper to protect it from dust.
Quick Tips For Washing Kerala Saree At Home
Always use a mild detergent to avoid damaging the delicate fabric.
Test a small, hidden area of the saree for colour-fastness before washing.
Avoid machine washing, as the agitator can harm the fabric.
If your saree has heavy embellishments, consider professional dry cleaning.
Now you're all set to ensure your Kerala saree shines as brightly as your festive spirit this Onam 2023. Enjoy the celebrations while looking amazing in your beautiful Kerala saree!
Happy Onam to everyone celebrating.
