Tips For a Cozy and Warm Kitchen- Part III
Dress up your kitchen walls and floors
Now that you've chosen the design of your kitchen cabinets and worktops, the next move is to choose the materials and the colours of your walls. The most common materials for the kitchen walls are tiles, wallpaper and paint.
Tiles will mostly be used as a backsplash above the hob and the worktop and they come in a lot of different shapes and sizes. Colour the tiles into your design drawing and measure how much you need. After that you can calculate how much that will cost you.
Paint is the faster and cheaper way to transform your kitchen, to make it a living place. Wallpaper is a more expensive but can give a character with its large variety of patterns. Use paints/ wallpapers made especially for kitchen, as these will be more resistant against humidity. It will sure be easy to clean.
It depends on your own taste which colours you will choose, but contrasting colours work the best. The kitchen would look really bland if you choose cream paint on the walls for cream kitchen units. Bold colour for kitchens is highly recommended, as this is an activity area that is mostly used by daylight. Define for yourself which atmosphere you want to create in your kitchen and use appropriate colour on your walls. After all, it is always easier to change the wall colour than your kitchen units!
Flooring
It is impossible to forget what's underfoot, with porcelain tiles and rich woods dressing up the floor. Flooring has become a vital part as this contributes to the wholesomeness of any room.
Go natural: Natural materials are dominating. Marble or porcelain in large 24 inch-by-24-inch tiles is in vogue. This gives a Mediterranean, earthy kind of feel that you can further get with soft-toned, tumbled marbles like travertine and saturnia which is available in a buffed, rather than polished, finish in creamy milk tones.
Pick porcelain: Tile is an endlessly popular choice, but when it comes to material, don't be afraid to consider porcelain along with ceramic. Larger porcelain tiles are popular. It is more refined than some ceramics and comes in matte or polished finishes. It has color all the way through so if it chips you won't notice it as much.
Darkened woods: Everyone loves hardwood, and most everyone selects lighter maples and oaks for kitchen floors. Try out darker tones. Use exotic, darker woods, such as cherry, mahogany, and Brazilian walnut, in combination with stone.
