5 Interior Design Tips For The Monsoon Season That Actually Work In Indian Apartments
Have you noticed how the monsoon transforms everything outdoors? The lush greenery, the cool breeze, and the fresh earthy scent make the season feel magical. But while nature gets a refreshing makeover, your home deserves one too.
The rainy season often brings stuffy rooms, damp corners, and a cluttered feel. The good news? You don't have to give your entire home a makeover. A few smart design tweaks can make your space feel cozy, fresh, and inviting, even when it's pouring outside.
1. Upgrade To Warm And Layered Lighting
The monsoon sky reduces light coming in from outside by 50%, and having just an LED-lit ceiling light in your room during the rains feels stark and cold. This can be remedied with layers. Get a warm white floor/table lamp in your living and bedrooms and turn them on in the afternoon. You can hang fairy lights around the shelf or the window frames and give the space a gold glow in seconds.
2. Introduce Darker, Warm Colors
Those pastel colors and whites that looked so beautiful during summers may look too light when the rains start. This is the time for deep and warm colors such as mustard yellow, burnt orange, forest green, terracotta, and rust colors. It doesn't require you to paint the walls again. Simply replace the hues of the cushion covers, bed sheets, curtains, and other such household accessories with the darker colors. You will notice a remarkable difference in the ambience of your room.
3. Textures Using Rugs And Other Woven Accessories
The monsoon season is just perfect for bringing out the rugs and other such woven articles which you have been storing away for the summer months. Texture gives your room warmth, especially the room that is drenched with rain outside. You can give warmth to your space without messing it up with the help of a heavy rug of wool or cotton or by keeping a jute basket or hand woven throw blanket in your bed.
4. Designate One Specific Cosy Corner
The single most powerful way of styling the monsoons is by selecting a corner in your house and making it very cosy. It will have a chair or a floor cushion near the window, a little table for your tea, some lamps, a throw rug and some reading material. You now have a corner dedicated solely to watching the rains and just chilling out in the mornings without doing anything, and all of this would cost you virtually nothing if you already own these items.
5. Maintain A Fragrant Interior Using Indoor Plants And Scent
With the moisture brought about by monsoon weather, it will not take long for your apartment interior to start smelling stale. Some indoor plants, such as snake plants, money plants, and peace lilies, which grow well indoors and purify the air, should be planted to counterbalance this problem. These plants should be planted in windows that receive indirect sunlight but not excess water. Also, use natural room scents like an incense stick of cedarwood or vetiver at night or a diffuser in sandalwood or petrichor scent.
A Word From An Expert
According to Raghunandan Saraf, Founder and CEO of Saraf Furniture, "It is the monsoon season that tells the difference between a house that has been well designed and one that hasn't been. It is only those homes that look and feel welcoming during monsoons that the owners have been able to incorporate light and textures in their home. Both these features can be incorporated in a space quite easily and they do not cost much at all. To style your interiors during monsoons, my advice to you would be to start off with one beautiful lamp and one warm throw. These two alone will transform your home on a rainy night in ways that buying new furniture won't."
Make Your Home Monsoon-Ready
Monsoon doesn't have to mean living in a gloomy home for the next few months. A few thoughtful touches, like warm lighting, soothing colours, and a cozy corner, can make your space feel brighter and more inviting. Before you know it, your home will become the place you will love curling up in, even as the rain pours outside.
