World Brain Tumour Day 2026: Not Every Headache Is Harmless, Experts Warn
We have all had a headache at some point. Most of the time, it is nothing more than a long day, too much screen time, or not enough water. We take a tablet, rest for a while, and move on. But sometimes, a headache is the body's way of raising a quiet alarm.
"The challenge is knowing when to listen more carefully. As a neurosurgeon, one of the hardest conversations I have is telling a patient that the headache they ignored for months was actually the first sign of something growing inside their brain. Not because they were careless people, but because the symptoms of a brain tumour can be deceptively ordinary in the beginning," said Dr Tharun Krishna, Senior Consultant, Neurosurgery, Apollo Adlux Hospital, Karukutty, Angamaly, Kerala.
On this World Brain Tumour Day, which is observed on 8th June every year, the expert explained what to watch for and how awareness genuinely saves lives.
When a Headache Is More Than Just a Headache
"The headache associated with a brain tumour has several distinguishing features. It tends to be worse in the morning, often waking a person from sleep. It builds gradually over days or weeks, rather than arriving suddenly. It does not fully respond to the usual painkillers. And it is frequently accompanied by nausea or vomiting, not because of a stomach problem, but because of pressure building up inside the skull," explained Dr Krishna.
If your headaches have been changing in character, becoming more frequent, or showing up in patterns you cannot quite explain, that is worth discussing with a doctor. I am not saying every morning headache is a tumour. Persistent, progressive headaches that do not fit your usual pattern deserve proper evaluation.
Seizures in Someone Who Has Never Had One Before
A first-time seizure in an adult, with no prior history of epilepsy, no head injury, and no obvious trigger, is a neurological red flag. It demands investigation.
"A brain tumour can irritate the surrounding tissue, creating abnormal electrical activity that results in a seizure. Sometimes these are dramatic, the kind most people associate with the word. But sometimes they are subtler: a brief moment of confusion, one hand or arm moving involuntarily, a strange smell or taste that comes and goes without explanation. These focal or partial seizures are easy to dismiss or misinterpret, which is exactly why they are worth paying attention to," said Dr Krishna.
Changes in Vision, Speech, or Memory
The brain is not a single, uniform organ. Different parts handle different functions. So where a tumour grows matters enormously, not just for treatment, but for the kinds of symptoms it produces.
"A tumour near the visual cortex at the back of the brain might cause vision loss, blurring, double vision, and loss of peripheral sight, which a person initially attributes to tiredness or needing new glasses," added Dr Krishna. A tumour affecting the frontal lobe might show up as personality changes; someone who was once patient becomes irritable, someone organised becomes forgetful and scattered. Families often notice this before the patient does.
Difficulty finding words, slurred speech, problems with balance or coordination; these can all be neurological symptoms. When they appear without a clear cause and do not resolve, they should not be brushed aside.
Weakness or Numbness on One Side
"Unexplained weakness or numbness, particularly confined to one side of the body, is something we take seriously in neurology. If someone notices that one arm feels heavy, one leg is dragging slightly, or one side of the face feels different, those are symptoms that warrant imaging. A brain tumour pressing on the motor cortex can produce exactly this kind of one-sided effect," explained Dr Krishna.
Most headaches are not brain tumours. Most first-time seizures do not turn out to be cancer. Brain tumours are rare, though the impact on those who receive the diagnosis is anything but.
The difference between catching a brain tumour early and catching it late can mean the difference between a surgery with a good outcome and one with far greater consequences. It can be the difference between a course of treatment and a conversation about palliation.
Message From The Expert
"If you or someone you know is experiencing headaches that are worsening over time, a first-time seizure, unexplained changes in vision, speech, or memory, persistent nausea without a clear cause, or weakness and numbness on one side of the body, please see a doctor. Ask for a neurological evaluation. In many cases, the answer will be reassuring. But the cases where it is not are precisely the reason you should ask," said Dr Krishna.
"Early diagnosis remains our most powerful tool. And it starts with a conversation that too many people delay because they do not want to seem like they are overreacting. You are not overreacting. You are paying attention. That is exactly what I would want every patient to do," he concluded.
