5 Lessons Endurance Sports Teach You About Success in Life and Work
Why Pickleball Is an Ideal Low-Impact Workout for All Age Groups
Fitness used to mean intensity - the harder the workout, the better it was working. That mindset is fading. People today want exercise that's sustainable, enjoyable, and easy to fit into daily life.
It's one of the biggest reasons behind pickleball's rise across the world.
We spoke to Siddhant Jatia, Founder and CEO, Picklebay, who explained why the sport works for almost every age group.
"What makes pickleball unique isn't just that it's one of the fastest-growing sports globally - it's that almost anyone can play it," said Jatia. "Whether you're 15 or 65, a seasoned athlete or picking up a racquet for the first time, the sport offers an accessible entry point without compromising on the quality of the workout."
Exercise Without Excessive Impact
Unlike high-impact sports that place significant stress on the knees, ankles, and lower back, pickleball is considerably gentler on the body.
The court is smaller than a tennis court, reducing the amount of distance players need to cover. The underarm serve, lighter paddle, and perforated plastic ball make rallies more controlled while still requiring quick reflexes, lateral movement, balance, and coordination.
"The result is a sport that elevates heart rate, improves cardiovascular fitness, and develops agility without exposing players to the repetitive impact associated with many traditional sports," added Jatia.
Of course, like any physical activity, injuries can occur. Proper footwear, quality court surfaces, and adequate warm-ups remain essential. But compared to many competitive sports, pickleball offers an excellent balance between physical challenge and long-term sustainability.
A Workout That Doesn't Feel Like One
One of the biggest barriers to fitness isn't access - it's consistency.
People don't struggle because they don't know exercise is important. They struggle because conventional workouts often become repetitive.
Pickleball changes that equation.
"Instead of focusing on calories or step counts, players become immersed in the game. Before they realise it, they've spent an hour moving continuously, improving hand-eye coordination, reacting quickly, and engaging multiple muscle groups," explained Jatia.
"At Picklebay, we've consistently observed that people initially join for fitness but continue because they're having fun. That distinction is important. The most effective workout isn't necessarily the most intense one. It's the one people willingly return to several times a week," said Jatia.
The Mental Health Advantage
The benefits extend well beyond physical fitness.
Modern lifestyles are increasingly dominated by screens. Whether it's work, entertainment, or social media, people spend a significant portion of their day indoors and online. This is particularly true for younger professionals and Gen Z, who often experience digital fatigue without even recognising it.
Pickleball offers a natural antidote.
"Stepping onto a court requires complete presence. During a rally, attention shifts from notifications and emails to movement, anticipation, and strategy. That mental reset can significantly reduce stress while improving overall mood," advocated Jatia.
Many players describe the sport as meditation in motion - a space where the mind is fully engaged in the present.
The Power of Social Wellness
Perhaps the most underrated aspect of pickleball is its ability to build genuine human connection.
Unlike gym workouts, which are often solitary experiences, pickleball is inherently social. Doubles play encourages conversation, collaboration, and interaction. New players are quickly welcomed into existing communities because the learning curve is relatively gentle.
We've seen strangers become regular playing partners within weeks.
This concept of social wellness is becoming increasingly important.
"Health today isn't just about stronger muscles or lower cholesterol. It's also about belonging, relationships, and emotional well-being. Recreational sports create that naturally. In many ways, pickleball has become as much about community as c/ompetition," said Jatia.
A Sport for Every Stage of Life
One of pickleball's greatest strengths is that it evolves with the player.
Children develop coordination and movement skills. Working professionals find an engaging way to stay active after long hours at a desk. Older adults appreciate the lower-impact nature of the sport while maintaining mobility, balance, and social engagement.
Very few sports can genuinely cater to such a broad demographic.
This inclusivity is one of the biggest reasons we're seeing residential communities, schools, clubs, hotels, and corporate campuses increasingly embrace pickleball.
It fits into everyday life rather than demanding that life revolve around it.
The Future of Fitness is Participation
Jatia concluded, "The future of wellness isn't about pushing harder - it is about participating more consistently. People are moving away from transactional fitness routines toward activities that combine movement, enjoyment, and community. They want experiences that improve both physical and mental well-being while fitting naturally into their lifestyles. That is precisely what pickleball delivers."
