Why You Have Food Cravings On Your Period?
Read to know how your food cravings can affect you during your periods.
Ever felt that certain cravings hit you when you're on your period? Are those cravings different from the ones that you get any other time of the month?
Experts reveal that during your period, your body is going through physiological changes. Your hormones are out of whack and cause you to crave certain nutrients.
During certain times, like your period or pregnancy, there are more active EOPs or endogenous opioid peptides which makes you have more cravings.

So, you needn't be surprised if you're itching for more snack like foods or chocolates when you're on your period. The most common cravings during menstruation are salty foods or chocolate.
Some studies have shown that 50% of women crave for chocolates at the onset of menstruation. The EOPs, amino acids bonds that are always present in the body are to be blamed for this.
The main reason for the cravings behind chocolate is that, cocoa is high in magnesium that your body runs low on when you're menstruating or during the premenstrual phase.

Make sure that you're going for dark chocolate as it has the necessary nutrients to curb your cravings.
Cravings during your periods are actually harmless, except when you crave for some weird things like ice chips or things even worse.
Some cravings are not normal and these might even be linked with anaemia. That is when you must hit the doctor.

Moderation is very important, no matter what kind of craving it is.
Apart from this, your hormones are to be blamed for, if you desire for candy or fries before periods. During this time, the pesky stress hormones called cortisol spikes and the feel good hormone serotonin dips. This fluctuation can make your body crave for more sugar and fatty foods.
