1. Repetitive Trauma
If you are a runner or you indulge in some kind of sport which applies a lot of pressure on the toe nails, then blood clots can be formed, making your toes appear darker.

2. Subungual Hematoma
If you have dropped a heavy object on one or more of your toe nails in the past and have not taken proper treatment, it could lead to the development of blood clots and cause black toenails.

3. Fungal Infections
If there is a fungal growth in the inner part of your nails, due to hygiene issues, then it could also cause darkening of the nails.

4. Skin Cancer
There are certain types of cancerous skin cells that grow abnormally under your toes, causing them to darken, so it is important to seek immediate medical attention.

5. Hormonal Imbalance
Many a times, due to hormonal changes, the melanin pigmentation in your body can increase in certain parts, including the skin under your toes, causing it to darken.

6. Lung Disorders
Black toe nails can also be a sign of certain lung disorders, especially seen in chronic smokers and it needs immediate medical care.
