Things That Damage Eye Sight

Our lifestyle, work culture, eating habits, the polluted environment and our lenient attitude towards ourselves is taking toll on our overall heath, including our eye sight. The pattern of life we are following is putting too much pressure on our body which in turn puts our body at risk of many diseases. A sensitive part of our body, eyes, is badly affected by the above mentioned factors.

You are living a lavish life with all the facilities available round the clock. You use the hi-tech mobile phones, computers, laptops and I pads. Besides that, you work on computer throughout the day, chat with friends; eat fast or junk food with coke or alcoholic drinks. Although, this is a normal lifestyle for today's generation, but the more it gives you the more it takes away from you.

Eye sight damage is one of the things that you lose at an early age nowadays. It has become so common to see people wearing high power specs or contact lenses these days. Did you ever think of the reason behind it? Why are we becoming so vulnerable to the eye diseases? There are many things which damage our eye sight. Some of the factors are as following:

Smoking has many bad effects on your overall health. Damaging your eye sight is one of them. There is a chemical very abundant in the cigarettes that harm a sensitive part of your retina, called the macula. Sometimes the damage is irreversible especially when cells of the macula die.

Sometimes, unknowingly we put too much strain on our eyes. We work on computers for long hours, watch TV, and play video games and keep reading or studying for long hours. This over-exertion on our muscles surrounding the eyes leads to the damage of our eye sight.

You have been advised to wear sunglasses whenever you go out. You know why? Ultraviolet rays coming from the sun can harm your eyes very badly. It can burn the cornea and damage eye lens and retina. Also, it increases the risk of cataract.

High blood pressure can be severely harmful for your eyes if not treated. It damages the blood vessels in the retina, the area at the back of the eye where images focus. This disease is known as hypertensive retinopathy.

If you are a diabetes patient, you are more likely to develop some eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy in which the retina gets badly damaged. Nowadays, it is a leading cause of new cases of blindness and blurred vision.

Alcohol

Excessive intake of alcohol can be harmful for your body, including your eyes. It may cause problems with your vision and overall eye health. You may have decreased visual performance, slow pupil reactions, frequent migraines, eye-redness and decreased contrast sensitivity.

If you follow an unhealthy diet and your body does not get the necessary nutrients for eye health, you are more vulnerable to many eye diseases. The deficiency of Vitamin A leads to blindness or difficulty seeing at night and dries the eye. Similarly, low levels of Vitamin B-12 may cause blurry vision or double vision.

All of us use computer but the problem associated with it is that we don't know our body's limits and overexert it. We see the computer screen for 5-6 hours, sometimes, without giving rest to your eyes. Unknowingly, during the work when we have to finish projects and assignments, we even forget to blink eyes. It causes eye strain, eye fatigue, irritation, light sensitivity, irritated eyes and double vision.
