Skin Flooding Trend: The New Hydration Mantra for a Glass-Skin Glow

There's a reason "glass skin" keeps trending; it's that fresh, dewy glow that makes your skin look healthy without trying too hard. But between pollution, stress, and long days, our skin doesn't always keep up. That's where the skin flooding trend comes in. Instead of piling on makeup, it focuses on something simpler-giving your skin the hydration it's been missing. The result is skin that looks naturally plump, smooth, and radiant, like it's actually well-rested.

We spoke to Dr Vidushi Jain, Dermatologist and Medical Head, Dermalinks (Noida & Ghaziabad), who explained the skin flooding trend and its benefits.

What is Skin Flooding?

"Skin flooding consists of layering a series of thin, hydrating skincare products, such as toner, serums, and moisturisers, designed to maintain moisture and strengthen the skin barrier," said Dr Jain.

This idea aligns with dermatological understanding of transepidermal water loss (TEWL)-the process by which water evaporates from the skin. Studies published in journals like the Journal of Investigative Dermatology show that maintaining adequate hydration and using barrier-supporting products can significantly reduce TEWL and improve skin function.

What's the mechanism?

The process begins with cleansing the skin to remove dirt and oil. This is followed by a water-based toner to prep the skin, and then a hydrating serum.

"A moisturiser is then applied to seal in the moisture. This step-by-step process helps maximise the absorption of hydrating ingredients, leaving the skin looking plump, nourished, and glowing," added Dr Jain.

Research in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology supports this multi-step approach, noting that combining these elements improves skin hydration more effectively than using a single product alone.

Why is it growing in popularity?

"Overexposure to pollution, along with stressful living conditions, ends up depriving the skin of essential nutrients as well as moisture, leaving it looking dull, dry, and sallow. Skin flooding technique can help achieve that healthy glow without a single bit of makeup," explained Dr Jain.

Who Is It Beneficial For?

"This trend makes a lot of sense for many skin types, especially as it benefits dry or dehydrated skin. However, even people with oily skin can follow this trend without any issues by choosing lightweight, non-oily products," suggested Dr Jain.

Avoid overstocking too many products at once. Select products according to your skin type. Sunscreen should be used throughout the day and should not be skipped.

"Overall, skin flooding is a simple and effective skincare method that helps maintain the skin's natural radiance from within while also enhancing its outward glow," concluded Dr Jain.
