Biotin or vitamin H is essential for our body as its deficiency causes a number of health issues. Read on to know more.
What is Biotin? Biotin is vitamin H. It ensures the complete well being of our skin, hair and nails, and assists in the metabolic processing of fats, carbohydrates and protein. It is also essential in preserving the health of the brain and the psychological well being of an individual.
Hence, you can see that the deficiency of biotin will not only damage our hair, skin and nails, it will also affect the functioning of our brain and might end up causing psychological disorders.

A few of the common signs of biotin deficiency are rashes, dryness or itchiness of skin, brittle nails, greyish skin, muscle ache, depression and lethargy. The lack of biotin can even lead to dermatitis and loss of hair.

Is biotin deficiency common? The answer is no, but there is a possibility that it may happen. A good example of the incidence of biotin deficiency is when one has a lot of raw egg whites. Raw egg whites contain avidin, a glycoprotein that binds with the biotin, therefore, preventing biotin to be absorbed by the body.

This often happens to body builders as they include plenty of uncooked eggs in their daily diet.
Biotin is not easily absorbed through the skin. It requires to be taken internally. There are various brands of biotin nutritional supplements accessible in the marketplace. Some products include biotin with some other vitamin nutritional supplements.

Some experts recommend a regular consumption of more than 1000 mcg of biotin per day to avoid the ill effects of biotin deficiency. Even if you consume biotin more than the required amount, it will not harm you.
This is because it is not considered to be toxic or dangerous as biotin is just a water soluble vitamin and will pass out of our body easily without causing any harm. No severe toxicity due to the high consumption has been recorded.
