A Step Towards Progress: Uttarakhand Couple Celebrates Daughter's First Menstruation, Inspiring Other
It's 2023 but myths and misconceptions about periods and menstruation still abound. But a Uttarakhand couple gave no heed to this so-called taboos and celebrated their daughter's menarche (first period) with a cake-cutting ceremony.

They say parents should be the best examples for their kids and this Uttarakhand couple took that really seriously. Jitendra Bhatt, the lucky young girl's father proudly shared his daughter's menarche news on his Facebook page, "... The daughter has grown up.." inviting his friends and family for a celebration at home.
Jitendra Bhatt and his wife, Bhawna Sati's initiative of celebrating their daughter's coming of age should be seen as the standard everywhere, imo.
"When I was young, I did not know much about it. As I grew older, I noticed that women and girls were looked down upon for having periods or even talking about it. If a woman touches anything at this time, then it is considered impure. I thought of celebrating my daughter's first period to remove all these misconceptions. It is not a disease of impurity or untouchability but a day of happiness," said the father of the girl.

Additionally, neighbours and friends expressed their satisfaction with Jitendra's initiative, saying that this initiative is likely to pay off and will help dispel the belief that girls during their periods are "impure".
But of course, there were some who poked fun at the celebration and what they didn't understand was that by mocking a progressive initiative as this, they are simply advertising their ignorance to the world.
From Shame To Strength: Addressing The Taboo Of Menstruation
Even in today's world of growth and advancement, the taboo around menstruation is still prevalent - not just in the villages but also in the city spheres. Clouded by various taboos and stigmas, menstruating women and girls are made to feel embarrassed and ashamed - the black packets from medical shops for sanitary napkins say hey...
Grown men with wives and daughters are unaware of it - older women who've reached their menopause are ashamed to talk about it - but why the shame?

By challenging societal norms and promoting open discussions, we can transform menstruation from a source of shame into a symbol of strength. It is essential to continue these efforts to ensure that women and girls can embrace their menstrual cycles with dignity and pride.
Menstruation is natural! It doesn't make anyone any less of a human - but mocking and discriminating people would make you a chump...
