"Returning to work after childbirth may feel like stepping into two full-time jobs at once-nurturing a newborn and resuming professional responsibilities. With the right strategies in place and support, however, this transition can be smoother, far less overwhelming," said Dr Acharya.
Build a Strong Support System at Home
And planning for your return is crucial: negotiate with your employer about flexible return options before you go back to work-whether this is a hybrid working arrangement, different hours, or a staged return. Besides allowing you to settle in slowly, this can also protect your physical recovery and psychological well-being.
Stay Flexible With Newborn Routines
Create a support system at home, be it through your spouse, parents, trusted caregivers, or hired help. "Sharing household tasks and baby duties reduces stress levels and prevents burnout. Equally importantly, be prepared for the unpredictability of newborn routines, which can only be managed with flexible expectations that make the whole process easier," added Dr Acharya.
Plan Ahead if You're Breastfeeding
For breastfeeding mothers, it's best to plan a pumping schedule ahead. Ensure you have a comfortable and private space at work, and invest in storage essentials. Keeping communication open with your supervisor helps in maintaining a routine without feeling rushed.
Prioritise Self-Care and Emotional Well-Being
Don't underestimate the power of self-care. Short breaks, mindful breathing, light walks, or simply resting when possible will help you recharge. Sometimes postpartum emotions are overwhelming; if you feel persistently low, anxious, or overwhelmed, reach out to a mental health professional without any delay.
Use Smart Time-Management Strategies
It may make all the difference in managing your time. Meal preparation, organizing of the baby's bags in advance, or using digital tools for reminders may ease your morning. At work, prioritise tasks and avoid overcommitting while you are settling in.

Dr Acharya, "The most important thing is to be kind to yourself. Juggling work and motherhood is not a race but a learning process. Celebrate the small wins, ditch mom's guilt, and remind yourself it's okay to ask for help; this is strength rather than weakness.
