Healthy Christmas Plate: Festive Food Swaps That Keep Energy High And Bloating Low
Christmas is a time of cosiness and festivity. Festive tables are frequently filled with meals that taste delicious but can make us feel lethargic, bloated, and uncomfortable. These dishes range from rich gravies and creamy sweets to sugary drinks. But to feel good, you don't have to give up your favourite Christmas foods. You can have a healthy Christmas meal that promotes digestion, maintains stable energy levels, and allows you to fully enjoy the festivities with a few thoughtful swaps.
We spoke to Eshanka Wahi, a Dubai Delhi-based Culinary Nutritionist and Holistic Wellness Coach and Founder of Eat Clean With Eshanka, who shared festive food swaps to keep energy high and bloating low.
Festive Food Swaps You Should Consider
Choose Better Carbs
Traditional Christmas meals often include white bread or refined pasta, which can raise your blood sugar levels. "Change to healthier options such as whole-wheat bread, brown rice, millets, quinoa, or oats. Because they digest more slowly and include more fibre, these carbohydrates keep you feeling filled for longer," suggested Wahi.
Swap Creamy Sides with Colourful Veggies
Although cheesy baked goods and creamy dishes are popular over the holiday season, they can feel uncomfortable and excessively heavy. Choose veggies like carrots, beans, broccoli, bell peppers, zucchini, or Brussels sprouts that have been roasted, grilled, or lightly sautéed for a simple festive switch. Instead of using thick sauces, add flavour using olive oil, garlic, herbs, and basic spices.
Replace Sugary Drinks with Herbal Drinks
"Soft drinks, packaged juices, and excessive alcohol consumption can upset your digestion and cause bloating. Instead, go with herbal teas, such as chamomile tea, anti-inflammatory teas, fennel tea, ginger tea, coconut water, infused water with lemon, mint, or cucumber," said Wahi. These promote healthy digestion, avoid constipation, and maintain a consistent level of energy.
Choose Natural Sweets Instead of Sugar
Christmas treats are typically high in sugar, which can cause bloating and disrupt your digestive system. "Try treats made with natural sweeteners like dates, jaggery, or honey for a festive swap. Reduced sugar intake results in less inflammation, easier digestion, and fewer energy slumps," shared Wahi.
