Hazelnuts Explained: Nutrition, Health Benefits, and Why They Belong in Everyday Diets
Hazelnuts are often seen as something reserved for chocolates, spreads, or fancy desserts. But at MEWA India 2026, held from January 23 to 25 at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Dwarka, one message came through clearly: hazelnuts are not just indulgent; they're practical, nutritious, and meant for everyday consumption.
During a conversation with Hasan Osman Sabir, Chairman of the Black Sea Group and Spokesperson for Hazelnuts for India, the focus shifted from comparisons and misconceptions to a simpler truth: all nuts are naturally healthy, and hazelnuts deserve a regular place in Indian diets.
How Hazelnuts Compare to Other Nuts
From a nutrition standpoint, hazelnuts are often compared to almonds and walnuts, but Sabir believes comparison isn't the right approach. "All nuts are healthy," he said, pointing out that they come straight from trees, with no artificial additives, unlike many packaged foods.
That said, hazelnuts do have their own nutritional strengths. "They are rich in unsaturated fats, contain important vitamins, and offer a different balance of proteins and minerals compared to walnuts, which are higher in fat overall," added Sabir. The idea, Sabir stressed, is not to rank nuts against each other but to include a variety of them in daily meals.
Why Hazelnuts Fit Easily Into Indian Diets
One advantage hazelnuts have is versatility. Globally, they are widely used in desserts, chocolates, ice creams, breakfast cereals, and baked goods. In India, however, they are finding a wider role.
Sabir noted that Indian cooking naturally adapts ingredients. He said, "During demonstrations, chefs were able to create multiple Indian dishes using hazelnuts within minutes. From gravies to snacks, hazelnuts blend easily into local flavours, making them more than just a dessert ingredient."
Another practical benefit: hazelnuts are often consumed without added salt. Unlike many roasted nuts that rely on seasoning, hazelnuts can be eaten as-is, helping people avoid excess sodium in their diet.
Hazelnuts and Allergy Concerns
Nut allergies are a growing concern, especially among urban consumers. Sabir clarified an important distinction: the most severe allergies are usually linked to peanuts, which are not tree nuts at all but legumes grown underground.
"Hazelnuts, on the other hand, are tree nuts and are known to have one of the lowest rates of adverse allergic reactions. While mild reactions can occur in sensitive individuals, severe responses are far less common," explained Sabir. He also advised consumers with allergies to avoid mixed nut packs and instead choose single-nut packaging for safety.
Common Myths around Fat and Weight Gain
One of the biggest misconceptions Sabir highlighted is the belief that nuts should be avoided because they are "too fatty." While hazelnuts do contain fat, nearly 60 percent, most of it is unsaturated fat, which the body can use efficiently.
"These fats don't automatically turn into body fat," he explained. When eaten in moderation, hazelnuts can actually support metabolism, help manage cholesterol levels, and provide sustained energy.
How Much Should You Eat?
The advice is simple: a handful a day. Hazelnuts can be eaten anytime hunger strikes, between meals, or as a snack anytime, helping people avoid ultra-processed foods. Regular consumption can support heart health, improve cholesterol levels, and contribute to a more balanced diet.
Health Benefits of Hazelnuts
Hazelnuts offer a combination of nutrients that make them suitable for daily consumption:
- Rich in healthy unsaturated fats that support heart health
- Contain essential vitamins and minerals
- Help manage cholesterol levels
- Naturally vegan and gluten-free
- Free from additives when consumed raw or dry-roasted
- Provide long-lasting energy and help control hunger
- When eaten in moderation, hazelnuts support overall health without contributing to unhealthy weight gain.
From Premium to Everyday
Hazelnuts are often seen as premium in India, largely due to limited availability and recent price fluctuations. Globally, however, production has crossed one million tonnes annually, and in regions like Europe, hazelnuts are a regular pantry staple.
Sabir believes this perception will change. As availability improves and awareness grows, hazelnuts are likely to become just another everyday nut in Indian households, not a luxury, but a habit.
"In a few years, it won't feel premium anymore," he said. "It will feel normal."
