Pink Cotton Candy Or 'Buddhi Ke Baal' Can Cause Cancer Or Kill You, Know Harmful Effects Of 'Rhodamine B'
The vibrant colours of cotton candy in the city have recently faded following a crackdown by authorities in Tamil Nadu. This action was taken after discovering that harmful chemicals were being used to produce the eye-catching pink, violet and green hues of cotton candy to attract children.
The culprit has been identified as a textile dye known as Rhodamine B, which were deemed 'substandard and safe' under the Food Safety and Standards Act, of 2006. The added colouring matter showed the presence of Rhodamine-B and an unidentified violet colour, which are prohibited.

What Is Rhodamine B?
Rhodamine B is a synthetic dye commonly used in industrial and cosmetic products to impart a pink to red color. While it is effective as a coloring agent, Rhodamine B has been associated with several health risks due to its potential toxicity.
The shift towards unsafe colours by some candy makers, primarily to reduce costs, is becoming concerning. Doctors have weighed in too and suggested that the sugar in cotton candy poses a greater health risk than the color, provided that the colours used are approved and in small quantities. Understanding these risks is important for ensuring the safe use of products containing Rhodamine B.
Let us know the harmful effects of Rhomadine B on health.
1. Carcinogenicity
Rhodamine B has been classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Studies have shown that exposure to Rhodamine B may increase the risk of developing cancer, particularly bladder cancer, in humans.
2. Skin Irritation
Rhodamine B can cause skin irritation, especially in individuals with sensitive skin. Contact with Rhodamine B-containing products can lead to redness, itching, and inflammation of the skin.
3. Eye Irritation
Exposure to Rhodamine B can also cause irritation to the eyes. Contact with the eyes can lead to redness, tearing, and discomfort.
4. Respiratory Irritation
Inhalation of Rhodamine B dust or fumes can irritate the respiratory tract, leading to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
5. Gastrointestinal Issues
Ingestion of products containing Rhodamine B can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it may cause gastrointestinal bleeding and other serious complications.
6. Allergic Reactions
Some individuals may be allergic to Rhodamine B, leading to allergic reactions such as hives, itching, and swelling. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are possible but rare.
7. Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity
There is evidence to suggest that Rhodamine B may have developmental and reproductive toxicity. Studies in animals have shown that exposure to Rhodamine B during pregnancy can lead to adverse effects on fetal development.
8. Environmental Impact
Rhodamine B is not easily biodegradable and can persist in the environment for long periods. It can also bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, leading to potential ecological harm.
Further, it can lead to neurotoxicity and even organ damage, say experts.
In food coloring, safe and natural alternatives to Rhodamine B, such as beet juice, annatto extract, and turmeric, can be used to achieve similar coloring effects without health risks.
