Shefali Jariwala’s Shocking Health Mistake: Never Do This While Fasting, Say Experts
The sudden demise of actress Shefali Jariwala sent shockwaves across the entertainment world. Reports suggest that she was observing a fast on the day she passed away and had taken her regular medication without food. While exact medical reports remain private, this incident has sparked crucial conversations around the side effects of fasting while on prescribed drugs.
Doctors now warn that taking medicines on an empty stomach or fasting while under treatment can lead to dangerous health consequences, especially for people managing chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or thyroid disorders.
What Happens When You Take Medicine Without Food?
"Many medications are designed to be taken with food to ensure proper absorption and reduce side effects like gastric irritation or dizziness," says Dr. Nikhil Mehta, Senior Consultant Physician at Fortis Hospital.
Without Food
Blood pressure may drop sharply, causing fainting or heart complications
Stomach lining can get irritated, leading to ulcers or internal bleeding
Drug absorption gets altered, making medicine less effective or too strong
In case of insulin or diabetes tablets, fasting may trigger hypoglycemia (low sugar levels), which can be fatal
Common Medications That Shouldn't Be Taken While Fasting
- Blood Pressure Medications (e.g., beta-blockers)
- Diabetes Medications (e.g., insulin, metformin)
- Thyroid Supplements
- Anti-anxiety or Anti-depressants
- Steroids or Strong Antibiotics
If You Must Fast, Here's How To Stay Safe
Dr. Mehta shares safety tips: Always consult your doctor before fasting with medications, If allowed, adjust your dosage or timing as advised, Stay hydrated, even water-only fasts can lead to complications if meds are involved, Break fast if you feel dizzy, confused, or excessively weak and consider intermittent fasting models under supervision instead of complete fasts.
Faith And Health Must Go Hand In Hand
Many people fast for religious reasons, especially during festivals. But mixing devotion with negligence can cost lives. The case of Shefali Jariwala reminds us all that even healthy-looking individuals may have hidden vulnerabilities and fasting should never override medical logic.

"Spirituality is powerful but not stronger than your body's biological needs," adds Dr. Mehta.
Fasting is personal. But if you're on medication, it's not just a matter of willpower, it's a matter of survival. Let this be your reminder: consult, adjust, and stay aware.
