We spoke to Dr Rohan Palshetkar, Consultant IVF Specialist, Bloom IVF, Palshetkar Patil Nursing Home, Opera House, who explained the importance of early detection of ovarian cysts and its awareness along with timely check-ups.

What Are Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within the ovary of a woman. "Most are harmless and resolve naturally; however, some can affect reproductive health and future fertility. In my practice, I believe that earlier detection of cysts can make a huge difference in diagnosis and treatment options, which usually don't require surgery," explained Dr Palshetkar.

Who Is Most Likely to Get Them?

"Cysts can occur at any age, but they are especially common during the reproductive years. Most are functional cysts, which develop as a normal part of ovulation. However, some cysts are complex and often necessitate careful management, especially in cases when fertility is at stake," said Dr Palshetkar. Some of these include:

• Endometriomas (endometriotic cysts/chocolate cysts)
• Dermoid cysts
• Persistent or large cysts

When Cysts Affect Fertility

Not all ovarian cysts impact fertility, but certain kinds can.

Endometriomas (Chocolate Cysts)

"These can damage the ovarian reserve and even affect implantation, making it harder to conceive naturally," warned Dr Palshetkar.

Large or Persistent Cysts

"They can alter ovarian anatomy, reduce egg quality, and sometimes require surgical removal, which may further impact the ovarian reserve," added Dr Palshetkar.

Why Early Detection Makes a Difference

The earlier a cyst is found, the more options women have for fertility-preserving, non-surgical treatments. Early detection helps in:

• Monitoring cyst growth
• Timely intervention when necessary
• Preventing complications such as rupture, torsion, or infection
• Planning fertility preservation through oocyte or embryo freezing, especially in cases like endometriosis
• Regular visits to gynaecologists ensure the cysts are diagnosed before they become painful and complicated.

When to See a Gynaecologist

You should seek medical advice if you experience:
