Have you ever felt constantly tired, low, anxious, or unmotivated, only to be told it's "just stress"? It's a common experience. But what many people don't realise is that certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies can closely mimic the symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Before assuming burnout or a mental health disorder, it may be worth asking a simple question: Is your body getting the nutrients it needs? We spoke to Dr Akash Shah, Vice President-Technical, Neuberg Diagnostics, who explained the impact of nutritional deficiencies on your mental health.
How Nutrient Deficiencies Affect Your Mood
"Your brain relies on key vitamins and minerals to produce chemicals that regulate mood, focus, and emotional balance. When these are lacking, both physical and psychological symptoms can appear," said Dr Shah.
- Vitamin B12 and folate are essential for producing serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that influence mood and motivation. Low levels can lead to irritability, emotional numbness, and low mood.
- Vitamin D, also known as the "sunshine vitamin," will naturally decrease during times of low sunlight exposure. A deficiency has been shown to cause low moods and symptoms of seasonal depression.
- Iron is an essential component for transporting oxygen throughout the body. A deficiency can cause fatigue, confusion, weakness, and exhaustion, even after a full night's sleep.
A lack of these vitamins will cause the body to have difficulty maintaining physical energy and mental clarity.
Why Iron Deficiency Feels Like Burnout
"Iron deficiency deserves special attention. It can cause such profound fatigue and cognitive sluggishness that even simple tasks feel overwhelming. People often describe feeling drained despite sleeping for long hours. This persistent tiredness can easily be mistaken for depression or chronic stress," explained Dr Shah.
Before Labelling It Burnout, Check Your Levels
You should have your nutrient levels checked first before concluding that it is burnout or anxiety if you have been feeling strange lately. "This is where a wellness genomic test comes in handy, as it helps to pinpoint whether your body has a hard time absorbing certain vitamins. This way, you can optimise your diet and supplement intake to get more energy and mental stability," added Dr Shah.
Seasonal Depression: A Signal From the Body
The seasonal changes in moods are commonly linked to purely emotional causes. Yet, they can also be a sign of certain nutritional imbalances, especially a lack of vitamin D during periods of low sunlight exposure.
In some cases, the answer may not lie in a radical change of lifestyle. Rather, supplementing what the body is missing can make a big difference in boosting energy and mental strength.
Restoring Balance Year-Round
Dr Shah concluded, "While Blue Monday may bring attention to discussions about low moods, emotional well-being needs to be addressed throughout the year. With proper testing, proper interpretation, and proper correction, people can achieve balance and maintain it beyond the low points of the year. By focusing on both physical and psychological aspects of health, a more comprehensive approach to well-being can be achieved."
