Doctors Say Women Ignore These Symptoms the Most — And That’s Risky
Women are often known for pushing through discomfort; whether it's fatigue, pain, or health changes, while balancing work, family, and daily responsibilities. But doctors say this habit of "carrying on" can sometimes delay diagnosis.
"In my clinical practice, many women tend to normalise symptoms that actually deserve medical attention, assuming they are due to stress, hormonal shifts, or a busy routine," said Dr Arpit Bansal, Laparoscopic Cancer Surgeon and Gut and Longevity Specialist.
"The body usually whispers before it screams," he says, explaining that small, manageable health issues can become complex diseases when warning signs are repeatedly overlooked.
Most Common Ignored Warning Signs By Women
Unexplained Fatigue
"It is often dismissed as 'just stress' or 'overwork'. However, persistent fatigue can be a clinical signal of anaemia, thyroid disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, or even early autoimmune disease. In many Indian women, nutritional deficiencies silently progress for years before being investigated," said Dr Bansal.
Menstrual Health
Another commonly ignored symptom is irregular menstrual cycles or abnormal bleeding. Hormonal imbalance is one possibility, but persistent irregular bleeding can also indicate polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometrial disorders, or, rarely, even early malignancy. Timely evaluation can prevent long-term complications.
Breast Lumps
Breast lumps are another area where delay is risky. "While many lumps are benign conditions, such as fibroadenoma, assuming they are harmless without evaluation is dangerous. Regular self-breast examination and timely imaging significantly improve outcomes if a serious condition is present," added Dr Bansal.
Digestive Issues
Many women also ignore persistent digestive issues like bloating, constipation or unexplained abdominal discomfort. "As someone deeply involved in gut health and longevity medicine, I often emphasise that the gut is not just a digestive organ but a major regulator of immunity, metabolism and hormonal balance. Chronic gut symptoms may reflect microbiome imbalance, inflammation, or metabolic dysfunction," said Dr Bansal.
Muscle and Bone Health
Another silent red flag is loss of muscle strength and bone health, especially after the age of 35-40. Women frequently overlook declining muscle mass and bone density until fractures or severe weakness occur. Tests like DEXA scans, vitamin D levels, and strength assessments should become part of preventive health, not emergency care.
"Modern medicine must move toward Medicine 3.0, proactive, preventive and physiology-focused . Metrics like VO₂ max, muscle strength, metabolic health and even heart rate variability (HRV) are emerging as powerful indicators of long-term health," added Dr Bansal.
Bottomline
Dr Bansal concluded, "The message is simple. Women take care of families , careers and society. But taking care of their own health must come first. Listening to the body early is not a weakness. It is wisdom. Prevention is not about fear. It is about respecting the biology of the human body."
