Doctors’ Day: The Early Indian Medicine Inventions; Its Not Just Ayurveda!
India has a rich history of ancient medical practices that have contributed significantly to the field of medicine globally. The early Indian civilization made several remarkable discoveries in the field of healthcare, developing medicines that were innovative for their time.

In this article, on the event of Doctors' Day, we will explore five medicines that were invented in early India and their contributions to the world of medicine.
The Invention Of Medicines In Ancient India
1. Ayurveda
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine that has been practised for thousands of years encompasses various herbal remedies and holistic approaches to healing. Ayurvedic medicines are derived from natural sources such as plants, minerals, and animal products.
Some popular Ayurvedic medicines include ashwagandha, triphala, and brahmi. These medicines have been used to alleviate various ailments and promote overall well-being.
2. Sushruta Samhita
The Sushruta Samhita is a comprehensive text on surgery and medicine, written by Sushruta, an ancient Indian physician. This text contains detailed descriptions of various surgical procedures and the use of medicinal plants for treatment.
Sushruta's contributions to the field of surgery were revolutionary for their time and laid the foundation for modern surgical techniques.

3. Charaka Samhita
The Charaka Samhita is another ancient Indian text that focuses on internal medicine. It provides detailed information about various diseases, their causes, and potential treatments. Charaka, the author of this text, emphasised the importance of prevention and the use of herbal medicines to maintain good health.
The Charaka Samhita is considered one of the most important texts in Ayurveda.
4. Neem
Neem, also known as Azadirachta indica, is a tree native to the Indian subcontinent. Various parts of the neem tree, such as the leaves, bark, and seeds, have been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries.
Neem has antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an effective treatment for various skin conditions, digestive disorders, and oral health issues [1].
5. Turmeric
Turmeric or Curcuma longa is renowned for its medicinal properties. While not a 'medicine' per se, turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and possibly even anticancer properties. It has also been associated with improved cognitive function [2][3].

Turmeric has been used in Ayurveda to treat various ailments, including arthritis, digestive disorders, and skin conditions.
On A Final Note...
Early India made significant contributions to the field of medicine through the invention of various medicines. Ayurveda, Sushruta Samhita, Charaka Samhita, neem, and turmeric are just a few examples of innovative medicines that originated in ancient India.
These medicines have stood the test of time and continue to be used today, showcasing the wisdom and knowledge of early Indian physicians.
