Lemon, a small yellow tangy flavoured fruit is one of nature's best creations and gift to humans. Scientifically called Citrus limon, this evergreen plant is now found all around the world though it is native to Asia. All the credits of the popularity of lemon go to its juice which has both culinary and non-culinary properties, especially cleansing uses.
This tropical fruit is a wonderful combination of vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, iron and magnesium, and is an excellent source of fibre, vitamin B6, calcium, potassium and copper, as well as folate and potassium. The tangy flavour comes from acetic acid present in it.
While lemon comes with plenty of health benefits, we will particularly discuss its role in curing kidney disorders, especially kidney stones.
Kidney is a bean shaped organ found in the lower abdomen region of the human body and is involved in the filtration and removal of toxic and unwanted substances from the blood through urine.
However, sometimes excess salt, minerals and other discarded substances get accumulated in the kidney and form a solid mass called kidney stone. Most of these kidney stones are calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate. While some stones can pass by themselves, some stones need medication.
Lemon juice can be used by following ways to dissolve the kidney stone naturally:
1. Lemon Juice:
Citric acid present in lemon juice helps to prevent the formation of kidney stones by increasing the acidity of the urine. Potassium citrate, the most convenient formulation for treating kidney stones is nothing but a form of citric acid.
Two to four ounces of lemon juice provides sufficient citric acid to fulfil the daily requirement for kidney health. The juice can be taken directly or with warm water and honey or in the form of lemonade.
2. Lemon Juice With Apple Cider Vinegar:
Apple cider vinegar is also rich in acetic acid and hence can be combined with lemon juice for the treatment of kidney stones.
Mix the juice of half a lemon, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink the mixture. It can be taken in intervals of every 2-3 hours or as often can be done on a daily basis for faster recovery from kidney stone-related pain and symptoms.
3. Lemon Juice With Wheat Grass And Basil:
This is a very effective combination as just like lemon juice, basil leaf juice also has acetic acid. Additionally, it lowers the uric acid level in the blood which further reduces the risk of stone formation. Wheatgrass is a natural diuretic agent that increases urine flow, hence increases the chances of stone removal faster.
Prepare a mixture with a glass of wheatgrass juice and add a teaspoon each of lemon juice and basil juice and consume twice a day for better results.
4. Lemon Juice With Olive Oil:
The acetic acid present in the lemon juice dissolves the stone while olive oil creates a coating on the inner wall of tubes for less painful and easy expulsion of kidney stones.
Mix ¼ cup each of lemon juice and olive oil thoroughly. Consume the mixture followed by intake of plenty of water. This technique can be repeated for 3 days or until the stone is not excreted.
However, while using these home remedies, a few things should be kept in mind.
a. Always use fresh lemons, not the canned lemon juice.
b. Consume lemon tea frequently to avoid the formation of kidney stones in future.
c. If the symptoms still persist after using the remedies for 2-3 days, immediate physician consultation is advisable.
