A new study has found that Tibetan yoga helps chemotherapy patients sleep better. The study, conducted by the University of Texas MD Anderson Sancer Center, found that women who participated in one-on-one Tibetan yoga sessions four times a week slept better.
According to the study having a disturbed sleep is one of the most common side effects that cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy face. Meanwhile they also tend to feel drowsy and have insomnia.
For the study 227 women who had breast cancer and were undergoing chemotherapy were taken into consideration. The participants were broken up into three groups: one group participated in a Tibetan yoga program, one group focused on simple stretches and one that did neither of the two.
According to Dr Lorenzo Cohen, the lead author for the study, researchers wanted the patients to practice Tibetan yoga, specifically, because it is low-impact.
Patients who practiced Tibetan yoga focused on visualization, posture, meditation and controlled breathing.
After about months time, those women who practiced Tibetan yoga experienced sleep efficiency and there was a tremendous improvement in their sleep quality as well.
