Cold and cough are quite common these days with the rising pollution levels, the shifting of climatic conditions and the general immunity of the population at large.

It may be a common cold with a running nose or blocked nose, but it is enough to ruin the day and all the desired plans.

Whether it is a cough or cold, it is better to nip it in the beginning itself, so that it doesn't aggravate into more serious problems later.

At the same time, it is not necessary to pop in a pill or down a teaspoon of syrup during an immediate onset of the problem.

Ajwain or carom seeds, hailed as a medicinal spice, act as a strong expectorant and cure dry cough. Ajwain is a powerful respiratory stimulant that decongests airways inside the body.


Basil Or Tulsi

Chewing tulsi leaves gives relief from cold and cough. Tulsi leaves are used in the preparation of many herbal cough syrups and expectorants. The leaves help in clearing the mucus in bronchitis and asthma. They are also effective in the treatment of phlegm from the bronchial tube. Tulsi leaves can be boiled, and this water serves as an effective antidote to treat a sore throat.



A medicinal spice, cinnamon has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties that combat and prevent cold. A quarter teaspoon of powdered cinnamon added with honey should be taken twice in a day for 3 continuous days, for even the most adamant cold to subside down.



Garlic boosts the immune system, which helps us to fight cold and cough. Add a few pods of garlic to your vegetables or eat them raw.



The antifungal, antitoxic and antiviral properties of ginger help in effectively treating the common cold. Ginger juice stimulates the secretion of mucus, providing relief from cough, itchy and sore throat. Chewing pieces of ginger or brewing it as tea and having sips of the concoction can also help treat the cough.



The soothing properties of honey in relieving cold and cough are well known. A teaspoon of honey can help in alleviating acute cough by providing relief. It can be taken with lime juice and ginger too.



Onions are a natural decongestant and help unplug a blocked nose. Have it raw or have it as a teaspoon of juice, it is sure to provide a great relief.



A pinch of black pepper powder added to a teaspoon of honey should be taken regularly every morning to get relief from cold and cough.



The humble salt is a cheap but effective home remedy to alleviate cold and cough. Add a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle the saline solution. It drains the excess fluid from the inflamed tissues in the throat and provides an instant relief. Gargling also removes irritants like bacteria, fungi and other allergens from the throat.



Hailed as yellow gold, turmeric has a range of healing powers and is known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities. You can get relief from acute or chronic cough by adding a pinch of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk.

The compound curcumin present in turmeric is an antibacterial and antiviral agent and provides an amazing relief by treating cough. Natural remedies help the body to build immunity against diseases. Drinking hot turmeric milk every night helps in warding off the cold.
