12 Effective Home Remedies For Sore Throat

Sore throat is caused by bacteria, virus, infection, pollution, allergic reaction and other things like excessive shouting.

There are a lot of pills that are available over the counter that will help in treating the symptoms. But popping a pill every time you get sore throat, is it healthy? Definitely not. Hence, it is always better to take up home remedies for a condition like this.

Along with these remedies, one also needs to be very careful about what one eats. It is highly essential that those suffering from sore throat avoid consuming any cold drink, sour or spicy food items.

1. Garlic:

Known for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, garlic helps in treating sore throats. The allicin contained in garlic helps to kill the bacteria that causes sore throat. It can be consumed raw or cooked along with food.


2. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is known for its antibacterial properties. Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a bit of lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey along with a glass of warm water. Drink this at least two times a day.


3. Lemon:

Squeeze the lemon juice in a glass containing warm water. Add a teaspoon of honey and then mix it well. Drink this at least twice a day. It helps.


4. Honey:

Known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, honey is used since ancient times to treat sore throat. Add one to two tablespoons of honey to one cup of hot water and drink it two-three times a day. Or you can have a teaspoon of honey before going to bed.


5. Cinnamon:

Take a few drops of cinnamon oil, mix it along with a teaspoon of honey and then have this twice a day. This helps provide relief from throat pain quickly.



Known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is one of the best ingredients to treat sore throat. Take a bit of turmeric powder, mix it along with a glass of warm water and then drink it on an empty stomach in the morning.


7. Fenugreek:

Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, fenugreek helps provide relief from sore throat. Add about two-three teaspoons of fenugreek seeds to water. Boil it well, strain it and then allow it to cool for a while. Gargle with this water.


8. Salt Water Gargle:

Take a glass of warm water, add about a teaspoon of salt and then mix it well. Gargle with the solution. This helps provide immediate relief from sore throat.


9. Licorice Root Tea:

One of the best known ingredients to treat sore throat is licorice. By drinking licorice root tea you can naturally get some relief from your sore throat.


10. Cloves:

Put about two cloves in your mouth and keep sucking them until they become soft. Chew them and then swallow. This helps cure sore throat effectively.


11. Chamomile Tea:

Chamomile tea is one of the best home remedies for sore throat. Add a bit of chamomile powder to a glass of hot boiled water. Steep it for about 10 minutes. Strain it and then drink it 2 times a day.


12. Ginger:

Known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, ginger helps in fighting sore throat. Boil water, add a few cubes of fresh ginger and then boil it for about 5-10 minutes. Strain it and then drink at least twice a day. One could also add a teaspoon of honey.
