Vinegar Test To Detect Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer causes 11 deaths in every 1,00,00 Indian women. That is very high statistic considering the world standards. Cervical cancer is a deadly type of cancer that affects women. It is a unique type of cancer because it is caused by a virus. It is the only type of cancer that can be passed on like a sexually transmitted disease. This cancer attacks the cervix of women and spreads quickly.
It has so far been very difficult to stem the flow of cervical cancer because it hardly shows any symptoms until it is too late. Most women are unable to detect the first signs of cervical cancer and perish due to it. So the only way to cure the risks of this cancer is through regular screening. So far, only pap smear test was done to detect this type of cancer.
But, pap smear tests are expensive and not very popular in India. So while the developed world has cut the risks of this cancer by doing regular pap smear tests, India and other developing countries are facing the challenge. The only other way to protect yourself against cervical cancer is vaccine. The vaccine too is expensive and not widely available. And to solve the problem, the doctors at the Tata Memorial Hospital have introduced the vinegar test.
The vinegar test is both easy and cheap. In this test, a woman's cervix is first swabbed with vinegar. A few minutes later a light is used to inspect the cervix. Cancerous tumours are supposed to turn white when they come in contact with vinegar. It is not known whether the vinegar test is 100 percent full-proof as of now. However, we certainly know that its quick and feasible. A test study done in Mumbai has given encouraging results. The doctors of the Tata Memorial Hospital are busy training personnel for carrying out the tests on women from rural areas of Maharashtra.
As this test is cost effective and the results are immediate, a lot of women are expected to come forward for regular screening. Besides the kit for this test can be easily circulated to the remotest villages and para-medics can be trained to do it in no time. Early detection is the key to survival for all types of cancer. That is why, this test is of vital importance for the health of Indian women.
The vinegar test is expected to cut the risks of cervical cancer to a large extent in India and other developing nations.
