Body Art Craze Ticking Infection Timebomb
Studs and rings everywhere in the body add punk to your personality but accessories,bleeding,blood,body art,body piercing,children,disorder,genital piercing,health,infection,lips,nipple piercing,swimming,tropical island is a ticking infection timebomb, experts have warned.
One in three who got body art done were forced to seek medical advice for minor swelling and infection as well as serious complications such as blood poisoning and bleeding.
Health experts have warned that the boom in body art could "place a significant burden on health services for many years".
The survey by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine revealed those aged between 16 and 24 were found to be most at risk, with 31 per cent reporting infections or serious bleeding.
Lead researcher Fortune Ncube said, "This is the first study to look at the prevalence of and complications arising from what has become a popular piece of body art." Of all the piercings, 33 per cent were in the navel, 19 per cent were in the nose, followed by ear (13), tongue (9), nipple (9), eyebrow (8), lip (4), genitals (2), and some other part of the body (3).
The type of piercing also varied by gender with nipple piercing being the most popular among men but one of the least popular among women, while navel piercing was by far the most popular in women but was rare in men.
Problems were most likely to be reported with tongue piercings (50 per cent), followed by piercings of the genitals (45 per cent) and nipple (38 per cent).
"Although most problems associated with piercing are usually minor and self limiting, some complications are serious and can be fatal," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.
