Back in the olden days, people had to work a lot and most things in life involved manual labour, which used muscle strength and energy. For example, people had to build their own houses, do their own gardening, chop wood, cook, etc. Even moving around from place to place was mostly by foot or on bicycles, before the invention of modern-day vehicles. They also had to work on strenuous jobs for a living such as farming, unlike today's desk-bound jobs.
