Cannes 2026: Alia Bhatt’s Lace Umbrella Made Her Corset Saree Look Feel Straight Out Of Vintage Cinema
Alia Bhatt didn't just show up for Day 2 at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. She arrived with a look that felt like it was designed to start conversations. At the inauguration of the Bharat Pavilion, where she represented Indian cinema alongside filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, her outfit became one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the festival-part heritage and part high-fashion experiment.
Alia Bhatt's Corset-Saree That Redefined Familiar Silhouettes
Styled by Rhea Kapoor, Alia's ensemble was built around a striking idea: what happens when a Victorian corset meets a traditional saree?
Designed by Tarun Tahiliani, the answer came in the form of a "corset-saree". The upper half was sharply structured with a sweetheart neckline, giving the look a sculpted, almost architectural edge. Below it, ivory Chanderi silk and organza flowed into dhoti-style pleats, eventually extending into a sweeping palla that moved like a soft train behind her.
The detailing mattered just as much as the silhouette-hand embroidery and metallic threadwork caught light subtly, never overpowering the fabric's natural texture.
Ivory, Craft, And A Very Intentional Colour Story
There's a reason ivory kept showing up across the look. The fabrics, primarily Chanderi silk and organza, gave the outfit movement without losing shape. The embroidery stayed close to the surface instead of sitting heavy on it, keeping everything visually light even with a strong structural base.
Alia Bhatt's Jewellery That Chose Heritage
After a more global, high-shine appearance on Day 1, Alia shifted direction completely. This time, the jewellery spoke a much more rooted language.
A delicate gold nath became the focal point-small, precise, and instantly noticeable in how it framed her face. The hathphool added layered craftsmanship, connecting wrist to fingers in traditional styling that felt refreshed for a Cannes setting.
A tiny ivory bindi tied the look together without tipping it into costume territory. Earrings were kept minimal with small gold studs, allowing the statement pieces to breathe.
The Umbrella That Changed Everything
If the outfit built the foundation, the accessories turned it into a viral fashion moment.
The ivory lace parasol-custom-made to mirror the saree fabric added a cinematic softness that felt almost like a frame from vintage European cinema. It brought an unexpected contrast to the structured corset and sculpted drape.
That balance is what made it memorable: Indian craftsmanship in the outfit, European visual nostalgia in the accessory, and Cannes glamour tying it together. Neutral Manolo Blahnik mules grounded the look, keeping the focus on silhouette and movement.
Alia Bhatt's Hair And Makeup: Soft, Controlled, And Camera-Ready
Alia Bhatt's skin was kept dewy with a soft glow, paired with a nude-pink lip and subtle brown-toned eyeshadow. It photographed cleanly without overpowering the outfit.
Hair was styled in loose Riviera waves with a middle parting, framing the face while keeping attention on the jewellery, especially the nath.
Alia Bhatt's Look That Worked In Layers
This Cannes appearance worked because it didn't stick to a single identity. It moved between structure and softness, heritage and modernity, Indian craft and global styling language-without forcing them into a single narrative.
Instead, it let the contrasts exist side by side. That's what made Alia Bhatt's Day 2 look, feel less like a red carpet outfit and more like a carefully built visual story.
