Tofu Makhani: Delight For The Vegans!

You must be wondering what kind of a recipe is this? This is our very own desi style tofu recipe. You must have tried out chicken makhani i.e. butter chicken or even paneer makhani, but here is totally unique and irresistibly delicious Indian recipe for tofu.

Tofu is an excellent option for vegans and vegetarians alike. The health benefits of tofu are worth a mention. Tofu is a highly nutritious, protein-rich food made with soya milk. It is a healthy replacement for our regular paneer and the taste is simply delicious. In this recipe of tofu makhani, tofu is the used as a substitute for paneer or other vegetables. The tofu is cooked in a silky, buttery gravy which will definitely tickle your taste-buds.

Tofu Makhani: Delight For The Vegans!

So, try out this exotic vegetarian recipe of tofu makhani and relish your meals with pleasure.

Serves: 3-4
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • Tofu- 1 block (cut into medium sized pieces)
  • Lemon juice- 1tbsp
  • Onion- 1 (finely chopped)
  • Tomatoes- 2 (finely chopped)
  • Ginger-garlic paste- 1tbsp
  • Tomato puree- ½ cup
  • Cashew nut paste- 2tbsp
  • Jaggery- 2tsp (grated)
  • Cumin seeds- 1tsp
  • Cardamom pods- 3
  • Cinnamon stick- 1
  • Cloves- 3
  • Peppercorns- 10
  • Turmeric powder- 2tsp
  • Red chilli powder- 2tsp
  • Kasuri methi- 2tbsp
  • Coriander powder- 1tsp
  • Salt- as per taste
  • Oil- 2tbsp
  • Coriander leaves- 2tsp (chopped)
  • Water- 1 cup

Procedure

  1. Marinate the tofu pieces with lemon juice, one teaspoon of turmeric powder, one teaspoon of red chilli powder, salt and coriander powder for about 10-15 minutes. Keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, cinnamon, cardamom, peppercorns and cloves. Saute on medium flame for a minute.
  3. Add the onions and fry for another 3-4 minutes on medium flame till they turn golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste, cashew nut paste, kasuri methi and fry for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Then add the chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and saute for 5 minutes.
  6. Once the tomatoes become soft, switch off the flame and set the pan aside to cool.
  7. As the mixture cools down, blend it in a mixer into a smooth paste.
  8. Transfer the paste into a pan and turn on the heat.
  9. As the gravy starts to boil, add the tofu pieces and salt.
  10. Mix well and simmer for about 5 minutes on medium flame.
  11. Once done, turn off the flame and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Tofu makhani is ready to be served. Enjoy this incredibly super and versatile Indian tofu recipe with rotis or jeera rice.
