Steamed Dahi Vada Treat For Brothers
This Raksha Bandhan, you need to treat your brother with something yummy and different. He may like a lot of recipes you prepare and pamper him with as his sister, but giving him something different this festival will be a surprise.
Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you can begin with something creamy and healthy. Reader, Anwesha B. would love to treat her brother to something yummy this festival. Since yogurt is his favourite ingredient, she plans to add in a little more spice by preparing yummy steamed curd vadas.
This delicious steamed curd vada recipe is not at all time consuming and anyone would love to indulge in it, since it is 'steamed'.

Serves: 4
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients
- Urad lentil - 1/2 cup(small)
- Mung Lentil - 1/2 cup(small)
- Ginger - 1 inch (grated)
- Salt - ½ tsp
- Green chilly - 2-3 chopped
- Sodium bicarbonate - ½ tsp
- The Dahi Mix
- Yogurt(curd) - 250gm
- Salt - ½ tsp
- Ground cumin - 2 tsp
- Red chilli powder - ½ tsp
- Chaat masala powder - 1tsp
- Fresh coriander - 2 tbsp
Procedure
- You need to first beat the curd, by adding 1/2 cup of water. When done, add all other ingredients under 'Dahi mix'(except chopped coriander). Mix all the ingredients well and keep this spicy yogurt in a fridge till the vada is ready.
- Now wash both the lentils and soak it in water for at least 4-6 hours. Drain the water from soaked lentil. In the grinder, grind these ingredients without water and make a coarse paste. Now add it into a bowl and keep aside.
- Apply a little oil to the Idli stand and keep the idli pan on low flame fire for steaming. Add in as much water as required or u can use steamer.
- Now add salt, ginger,chopped green chilly to the lentil paste and beat the mixture. If you feel that the mixture is thin then you can add 2-3 tsp of semolina to it . In the end add sodium bicarbonate to the paste and mix it well with a spoon well. Your Dahi Vada mixture is ready.
To Prepare The steamed curd vada
- Take a ladle full of mixture and fill in the idli stand. Flatten the mixture using wet hands to get it into the shape of a Dahi Vada.
- Keep the stand in the steaming pan and close the lid. Cook for about 15-20 minutes.
- When done, turn off the gas. Take out the Idli stand from the steam and allow it to cool. Remove the Dahi Vadas and place them in plate. Keep it aside for 5 minutes in order for it to get cool.
- Take 2 glass of warm water by adding 1/2tsp of salt and dip the vada's in this water. Let it stay for 5 minutes and take it out from the water. Squeeze the water from the vada.
Serving
- Place about 2-4 Vadas in a bowl.
- Now pour in your spicy yogurt on top of the vada and garnish with chilly powder, ground black pepper and coriander leaves.
- Dahi Vada is now ready to eat.
