The festival of Bihu is celebrated 3 times a year. It is one of the most prominent festivals of Assam, although it is also celebrated in many other regions of India. The first Bihu of the year is Magh Bihu and falls in January.

Magh Bihu 2024: Date, Time
This year the festival of Magh Bihu will be celebrated on 16 January. The Sankranti Moment on Magha Bihu will begin at 02:54 am on 15 January. The festival of Magh Bihu is celebrated for a week. This festival is celebrated as a celebration of the harvesting of the new crop. Different folk festivals and traditional games are organized for about a week.
Magh Bihu: Day Wise Events, Rituals
There are different traditions associated with this festival in different regions. On the first day of Magh Bihu, people prepare a house (hut) made of bamboo and grass, which is called Meji or Bhelghar. At night, people light a fire and gather around it and prepare various dishes called 'Uruka'. Sun God is also specially worshiped on this day.
Significance of Magh Bihu
At the time of Magh Bihu, Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Bihu festivals are also celebrated in different areas of the country. All these festivals are celebrated due to the harvest of the new crop and paying gratitude to mother nature. Bihu was earlier called Bishu. 'Bi' means asking and 'Shu' means peace and prosperity on earth, i.e. Bihu means asking and giving. On this day, various types of traditional dishes are offered to God.
