Who Should Perform Tritiya Shraddha?

If the death tithi of an ancestor is unknown, families traditionally observe Sarva Pitru Amavasya for general ancestral remembrance. In 2026, Sarva Pitru Amavasya falls on October 10.
What Rituals Are Performed On Tritiya Shraddha?
The specific procedure can differ according to family customs and regional traditions. Common practices associated with Shraddha include making a sankalpa, offering pindas, performing Pitru Tarpan and preparing food as part of the ancestral offering.
Pinda Daan traditionally involves offering pindas, often prepared using rice and other prescribed ingredients. Tarpan involves offering water to the ancestors, with black sesame commonly used in the ritual. Some families also offer food and dakshina to Brahmins or priests. Feeding crows, cows or dogs is another practice followed in some traditions.

Tritiya Shraddha is also known as Teej Shraddha. However, it should not be confused with Teej festivals such as Hartalika Teej. Here, the term refers to the third lunar tithi.
