Tirukkural-On Virtue-On Self Restraint-Kural 122

By Staff

Thirukkural In English, Kural 122
Kaakka porulaa adakkathai aakkam
Adhaninuun killai uyirkku.

It is well to treasure the virtue of self-control As there is no greater wealth for the soul.

If self-restraint and humility are assiduously practiced it would lead to the culturing of the soul and its ultimate exaltation. Man does not come by any possession more precious then self-restraint, for that is the basis of the virtue of humility and so ensures the treasure of God's graces in their fullness. These graces according to Leighton, just slide off the mountains of pride and fall naturally into the valley of the humble.

'And he that humbleth himself shall be exalted'.
