Eadham padupaak karindhu
The strong of mind do not shrink from right conduct;
They know its breach will spell ruin.
Whatever be the provocation, people with strength of character will not deviate from right conduct, because they are aware of the catastrophic consequences of such breach of standards. The word 'olkaar' is translated by Parimelalagar as 'Surungaar' referring to the person, as derived from the shrinkage of righteousness. Kaviraj Pandithar would translate it as 'Vittu vidaar' meaning 'will not abdicate'. Either of these brings out the meaning of Valluvar adequately. The former perhaps is a shade better.
