In respect of this Kural, K Srinivasan's translation is the one I like best:
Delight of charity they do not know,Who hoard their wealth and lost it so.
Men who have experienced the delight of giving, will never be so hard-hearted as to hoard their wealth and refuse charity. For, after all when they have the world, they cannot take it all with them. Men, who have not so far experienced this delight, would realize it, if they try it once. If they put it off, presently they may find it too late.
'Purananuru' highlights the same thought in the following lines:
Selvathup payanae eethal
Thuipaem yeninae thapuna palavae
Dryden confirms Valluvar's idea when he says –
'The secret pleasure of a generous act is the great mind's bride'.
