Tirukkural-On Virtue-Charity-Kural 224

By Staff

Thirukkural, Kural 224
Innaadhu irakkap paduthal iranthavar
Inmuhang kaanum alavu

The following interpretation is adapted from Rajaji;

It may be unpleasant to be begged of, but that is only till The distress-relieved face of the receiver lights up in radiance.

Rajaji adds, 'when you see that face, you will feel that it was indeed good fortune that you had the chance and the power to create so much joy, miserable human being as you are with so many limitations'.

Purananuru has a couple of lines which are related in relevance to this Kural:

Paaduperu parisilan vaadinanpeyar thal en
Naadu ilazanthathinum nani innaathena

(Puram – 165 : 10-11)

The king who faces a situation, in which he has to see a poet leave without his due prize, feels worse than he would if he loses his kingdom. This reinforces the positive aspect recorded in the present Kural.
