Mandi's Panchvaktra Temple, which is a centuries-old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva has miraculously survived the flood and emerged intact in flooded Beas after incessant rain earlier in June. It is one of the protected monuments that come under the Archaeological Survey of India and has been declared a national site.

According to the reports, 15-foot debris was deposited on the temple premises in which a five-foot idol of Lord Shiva was buried. However, there was no damage to the temple structure and this has surprised everyone who watched the viral video.

Panchaktra Temple is situated at the confluence of the River Suketi and Beas in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. This temple attracts a large amount of footfall pan India. The supreme shrine of this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Mandi is also known as 'Choti Kashi' or 'Himachal Ki Kashi' and is one of the ancient cities in India. This city also has 81 temples

This temple is inspired by the Shikhara architecture style, which looks astounding. The interesting part of this temple is that it got its name from the five-faced statue dedicated to Lord Shiva, out of which only three can be seen when viewed from the front.

The huge statue has five faces and it depicts different characteristics of Lord Shiva- Aghora, Ishana, Tat Purusha, Vaamdeva and Rudra. While Angora symbolises the destructive nature, Ishana means the omnipresent and omnipotent nature of Mahadev, Tat Purusha symbolizes his ego, Vaamdeva depicts the female facet and Rudra shows his creative and destructive aspects. Therefore, the idol of Panchvaktra is defined as the union of all these natures of Lord Shiva.

Even though the origin of the Panchvaktra temple is unknown. According to historical facts, the temple was restored under the reign of Sidh Sen's kingship (1684-1727) as it was damaged due to flood and rebuilt in the 18th century.

The temple is situated on a vast platform and it's main porch or Mandap is supported by 4 minutely carved pillars and the carving of the Nandi Bull, which is Lord Shiva's celestial vehicle is exemplary. The darshan time of this temple is 6 am to 6 pm.

In case you are planning to visit the temple between October and March then you will be able to enjoy the perfect climate. In the month of February, the temperature revolves around 22 degrees Celsius (highest) to 10 degree Celsius (lowest). However, in summer, it remains 35 degrees Celsius (highest) and 21 degrees Celsius (lowest).

You can reach Panchvaktra temple by renting some local mode of transportation- cab or bus and it is just 1 km away from Mandi bus station.
