Pitru Paksha 2026: Does Ancestor Worship Bring Bad Luck If Rituals Aren’t Performed? Astrologer Explains
Pitru Paksha 2026 is a significant period for families who observe traditions dedicated to remembering and honouring their ancestors. During these days, many families perform rituals such as Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Daan. But along with these traditions, there are also questions and fears about what happens when a ritual is missed.
Does missing Shraddha really bring bad luck? What does Pitru Dosha mean in astrology? And if someone forgets or misses the date of an ancestor's Shraddha, is there another way to honour them?
Astrologer, Tarot card reader, Vastu expert, Numerologist and Crystal Healer Rinhee Suberwal shares her perspective on these beliefs, including the spiritual understanding of ancestor worship, the astrological interpretation of Pitru Dosha and what families can do if they miss an important Shraddha date.
Does Missing Shraddha Bring Bad Luck?
Rinhee believes the idea should not be viewed only through the lens of fear or bad luck. For her, remembering ancestors is also about gratitude and acknowledging their contribution to the family.
"Ancestors are advocates who are fighting all kinds of karmic cases for us. They are our guardian angels. So, if we don't perform their rituals properly during Pitru Paksha and forget them conveniently, then they feel very sad," she says.
She draws a parallel with how people themselves may feel when their important rituals or occasions are ignored by their loved ones.
"It is like anyone of us would feel if people were not attending our rituals. We would feel that people have forgotten about us. Our ancestors have done so much for us, and when we conveniently forget them, that feeling of being forgotten is what comes into the spiritual understanding of these rituals," Rinhee explains.
According to her, the purpose of such traditions is therefore not merely to prevent something bad from happening, but also to express gratitude towards those who came before us.
"It is important to remember that these rituals are about acknowledging our ancestors and what they have done for us. It is not only about being scared that something bad will happen if we do not perform a ritual," she adds.
What Does Pitru Dosha Actually Mean In Astrology?
Pitru Dosha is another concept that can create anxiety, particularly when people experience recurring challenges in their personal or professional lives. Rinhee explains that, in her astrological interpretation, it is associated with karmic patterns believed to exist within a family lineage.
"Pitru Dosha means certain doshas that are done in the bloodline. It is connected with certain bad karmas that were done in the bloodline, which nobody took care of. Those karmas or patterns can then pass on from one generation to another," she says.
She believes this is why Pitru Dosha is sometimes considered when looking at recurring patterns in a person's life.
"When we talk about Pitru Dosha, we are looking at certain things that are believed to have remained unresolved in the bloodline. These are patterns that people believe can continue from one generation to another, and that is why Pitru Dosha pooja becomes important for families who follow this tradition," Rinhee explains.
She adds that Pitru-related rituals during Pitru Paksha are traditionally considered a way of addressing these concerns.
"It is very important to do Pitru Dosha pooja during these days for smooth progress in your life. The intention is to address these karmic patterns and seek peace for the family," she says.
How Are Spiritual Beliefs Different From Astrological Interpretation?
Rinhee says astrology and spirituality may overlap in discussions about karma and ancestors, but they are not exactly the same. According to her, astrology looks at patterns and their possible implications, while spiritual beliefs can help people emotionally deal with the idea of karma and its consequences.
"The astrological implication shows us the influence we are carrying since past births and what kind of pattern we are carrying forward. Astrology helps us understand those patterns through an astrological perspective," she says.
She further explains that spiritual beliefs can provide people with a sense of comfort while dealing with the concept of karmic retribution.
"Spiritual beliefs are such beliefs which soothe our karmic retribution and make us feel comfortable in our life. They give us a sense of understanding and acceptance, and thereby push us towards success, growth and peace," Rinhee adds.
For her, the two can therefore be understood as different ways of looking at the broader ideas of karma, family patterns and spiritual responsibility.
"Spirituality gives you faith and comfort, while astrology gives you an interpretation of the patterns that you may be carrying. Both can make a person more conscious about their actions and their responsibilities," she says.
What If A Family Misses The Shraddha Date?
One of the concerns during Pitru Paksha is what happens when someone forgets the date of an ancestor's Shraddha or cannot perform the ritual on the specific day. Rinhee says people should not feel that everything is lost simply because a particular date has been missed.
"There is a day called Sarvapitrapaksha Amavasya, which is on October 10. People can do Sarvapitrapaksha Shanti if they don't know the date," she says.
She also points towards Tarpan as another traditional practice that families can consider, depending on what is applicable to them.
"They can also do Tarpan, or whichever Pitra ritual is applicable for them. So, if somebody has missed the date or does not know the exact date, they should not simply stop thinking about it. There are other traditional ways through which they can honour their ancestors," Rinhee explains.
Remembering Ancestors Beyond Fear
Pitru Paksha 2026 is not only a period associated with specific rituals and observances but also a time when many families reflect on their connection with previous generations. Beliefs surrounding Pitru Dosha, karma and ancestral rituals can differ across traditions, communities and individual faiths.
For Astrologer Rinhee, the intention behind remembering one's ancestors remains central.
"The most important thing is to remember them. Our ancestors have done so much for us, and these rituals are one way of expressing gratitude towards them. Rather than doing everything out of fear, people should understand the meaning behind the tradition and perform it with respect and sincerity," she concludes.
