Kanya Pujan During Navratri 2026: Astrologer Gauri Jain On Significance, Rituals And Dussehra Traditions
Navratri 2026 is a time when devotees worship Maa Durga and reflect on the strength and significance of the feminine divine. Among the traditions observed during the festival, Kanya Pujan holds a special place, with young girls worshipped as symbolic representations of the Goddess. Usually performed on Maha Ashtami or Maha Navami, the ritual involves prayers, offerings and expressions of gratitude.
But what is the significance of Kanya Pujan, and are there specific rituals devotees should follow? As Navratri culminates in Dussehra, certain traditional practices are also associated with seeking blessings, overcoming obstacles and reflecting on the victory of good over evil. Vastu consultant, astrologer and numerologist Gauri Jain shares insights into these rituals, their significance and the practices devotees can observe.
What Is The Significance Of Kanya Pujan During Navratri?
Kanya Pujan is an important tradition observed during Navratri, symbolising devotion to Maa Durga and reverence for feminine energy. Explaining its significance, Gauri Jain shares,
"According to Hindu beliefs, young girls represent the pure, nurturing and creative power of the Goddess. Worshipping them is a symbolic expression of reverence for Maa Durga and Naari Shakti.
Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami are especially important days of Durga worship. Many families perform Kanya Pujan on either of these days as part of their Navratri observances.
It represents devotion, gratitude, purity, compassion and respect for the feminine divine.
Worshipping the Goddess should also inspire us to respect, protect and empower girls and women in everyday life. Traditions vary by region and family. Some devotees perform Kanya Pujan on Ashtami, some on Navami, and others on both days."
Kanya Pujan Rituals: What Should Devotees Follow?
Although the exact procedure may differ across households and regions, Kanya Pujan generally involves welcoming young girls with respect, offering food and seeking their blessings. Jain outlines the traditional sequence devotees can follow.
The exact procedure varies, but the following is a widely practised traditional sequence.
- Clean The Puja Area: Clean the home and puja space, light a diya and offer prayers to Maa Durga.
- Welcome The Kanya With Respect: Traditionally, devotees wash the girls' feet, offer them a seat and apply tilak. The ritual should be performed gently, keeping the children's comfort and consent in mind.
- Offer Prasad: Puri, kala chana and halwa are commonly offered as prasad, although local customs may differ.
- Offer Dakshina Or Gifts: Devotees may give fruits, sweets, clothes, chunri or dakshina according to their means.
- Seek Blessings And Conclude: Offer prayers to Maa Durga, respectfully seek the girls' blessings and conclude the ritual with gratitude.
An important traditional practice is that many families observe a fast and break it after Kanya Pujan.
Is It Necessary To Worship Nine Girls During Kanya Pujan?
Many devotees associate Kanya Pujan with the worship of nine girls, representing the nine forms of Maa Durga. However, the number of girls invited for the ritual may vary according to family customs and regional traditions.
Gauri Jain explains the different practices followed by devotees:
- Nine Girls: This is the customary practice in many households, symbolising the nine forms of the Goddess.
- One Girl: Some traditions permit the worship of a single kanya as a symbolic representation of the Divine Mother.
- Fewer Than Nine Girls: Devotees may perform the ritual with the girls available, according to their family or regional traditions.
The important principle is bhav, or sincere devotion. The ritual should never become a source of anxiety or an occasion to turn children away simply because the prescribed number cannot be arranged.
Dussehra Traditions: What Should People Keep In Mind During Ravan Dahan?
Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, marks the victory of good over evil. The burning of Ravana's effigy is a prominent part of the celebrations and symbolises the need to overcome negative qualities within ourselves. Jain explains:
The burning of Ravana's effigy reminds us to overcome ego, anger, greed, arrogance and the misuse of knowledge.
- Follow Fire And Crowd Safety Measures: Attend organised Ravan Dahan events, stay behind safety barricades and follow the instructions of the organisers.
- Protect Children And Animals: Keep children at a safe distance from fireworks and avoid exposing animals to unnecessary noise and danger.
These precautions help devotees participate in the celebrations while keeping themselves and those around them safe.
Auspicious Dussehra Rituals And Remedies To Observe
Apart from Ravan Dahan, Dussehra is associated with traditional worship practices that symbolise victory, protection and prosperity. According to Gauri Jain, devotees may observe the following rituals:
- Worship the Shami tree: Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, celebrates the victory of positivity over negativity and dharma over adharma. Worshipping the Shami tree is considered beneficial on this auspicious day. Devotees may light a diya near the tree and pray for success in their work, prosperity and the well-being of their families. The Shami tree is traditionally associated with victory and protection.
- Worship Maa Aparajita: Another auspicious practice is the worship of Maa Aparajita, the Goddess who symbolises invincibility. Devotees seek her blessings to overcome obstacles, gain inner strength and make the right decisions in life.
These practices are rooted in traditional beliefs, and devotees may observe them according to their family customs and personal faith.
Common Mistakes To Avoid During Dussehra Puja
While performing Dussehra puja, devotees may focus on completing specific rituals but overlook the values the festival represents. Gauri Jain advises approaching the occasion with sincerity and mindfulness. Here are some common mistakes and practices to keep in mind:
- Maintain cleanliness and devotion: Keep the puja area clean and perform the rituals with shraddha and sincere intentions.
- Avoid negative thoughts and behaviour: Refrain from anger, ego, harsh words and negative thoughts during the celebrations.
- Do not follow rituals out of fear: Puja should be performed with a calm mind and sincere intentions rather than out of fear of missing a ritual or blindly following totkas.
- Prioritise safety during celebrations: While performing Shastra Puja or participating in Ravan Dahan, safety should always be a priority.
Remember, Dussehra is not just about burning Ravana; it is about conquering the Ravana within us, including our ego, anger, jealousy and negativity.
The Deeper Meaning Of Kanya Pujan And Dussehra
Kanya Pujan and Dussehra are significant parts of the Navratri celebrations in 2026, each encouraging devotees to reflect on the values associated with divine worship. While Kanya Pujan expresses reverence for Maa Durga and feminine energy, Dussehra serves as a reminder to overcome negative qualities and uphold righteousness.
As Gauri Jain highlights, the significance of these traditions extends beyond the rituals themselves. Observing them with sincere devotion, respecting girls and women, practising kindness and prioritising safety can help bring their underlying values into everyday life.
