One of the most vibrant and revered festivals in India is Krishna Janmashtami a very auspicious day that marks the birth of Lord Krishna the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Janmashtami falls on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight in the Bhadrapada month of the Hindu Lunar Calendar, which is either August or September.

Janmashtami 2023: Date, Puja Muhurat
This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated both on 6th and 7th September 2023 and fasting is an important part of this day. The Nishita puja time is from 11:57 pm on 6 September to 12:42 am on 07 September. Also, Parana time will continue from after 4:14 pm on 7 September.
Janmashtami 2023: Puja Rituals, Worship Method
On this auspicious day, devotees observe fast for the entire day during the time when Krishna is believed to be born. They take a holy bath early morning to purify themselves and pure clean clothes. Then the idol of Lord Krishna is bathed in milk, honey, and ghee.
Once bathing is complete, they dress the Lord Krishna idol in new clothes, decorate the altar at home with flowers, and offer fruits, and all milk-related items to Lord Krishna. Sandalwood paste is applied to Lord Krishna's forehead and a peacock feather is also kept.
A conch shell is blown and mantras are chanted ( (Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare; Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare), and devotional songs are sung dedicated to Lord Krishna. Also, devotees and priests recite passages from the Bhagavad Gita or the Bhagavata Purana that contain the teachings and stories of Lord Krishna.
In the end, lit camphor or ghee lamp is waved in front of Lord Krishna in a clockwise direction while singing the Krishna Aarti. This is considered a gesture of respect and devotion.
Janmashtami 2023: History And Significance
Janmashtami is an important day for Lord Krishna devotees. Lord Krishna is said to descend the Earth whenever there is a decline in righteousness (dharma) and an increase in unrighteousness (adharma) to restore balance and guide humanity. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born in Dvapara Yuga as the eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva to kill the tyrant king, Kansa.

This festival plays an essential role in Indian culture. It propagates the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and symbolizes the eternal fight between good and evil. The festival also serves as a conduit of communal harmony and societal bonding.
Two places where the celebrations are at their peak are Mathura and Vrindavan as they are believed to be associated with the birth and childhood of Kanha. Also, people visit temples dedicated to Lord Krishna on this day.
Despite the common belief system, Janmashtami is celebrated differently in various parts of India. While Maharashtra observes 'Dahi Handi', Gujarat conducts 'Raas Lila'. It truly epitomizes the diverse cultural essence of India.
