Karadaiyan Nombu 2023: Vrat To Ensure Health And Longevity Of Husband

Karadaiyan Nombu, commonly known as Karadayan Nonbu, is celebrated at the time of Meena Sankranti or Sankramana when the 'Maasi' ends to give way to the 'Panguni'. It is an important festival for married women in the state of Tamil Nadu. Usually as per Gregorian Calendar it arrives in the month of March. According to religious beliefs, Savitri was a princess who performed this vrat to bring her husband back from the clutches of death. Her strength and resilience and devotion to her husband melted even Yama's heart who restored her husband's life for her sake.
Karadaiyan Nombu 2023: Date And Time
Karadaiyan Nombu will be celebrated on Tuesday, 14 March. The Karadaiyan Nombu Vrat time will be observed on 14 March between 6.23 am and 5.17 am on 15 March. There is an auspicious muhurat for tying the yellow thread or at 05:17 am on 15 March.
Karadaiyan Nombu is the Tamilian version of Savitri Satyavan Vrat that is observed in other regions in India. Karadaiyan Nombu is also known as 'Savitri Nonbu Vratham' which is performed by Tamilian married women in Districts of Tamil Nadu. Savitri Nonbu vrat is performed under different names in different states and young unmarried women and married women usually observe this on the last day of the Maasi month wherein they observe fast, worship Goddess Gowri, and then offer her the Karadiyan Nombu naivedyam. It is interesting to note that parana or breaking the fast is done exactly during Meena Sankramana when Maasi ends and Panguni begins.
What is most important for this festival is fasting from the early hours, perform pujas and praying for the longevity of the husband, or to get a good match for marriage. Tying a turmeric coated thread is mandatory for this event.
Karadaiyan Nombu 2023: Rituals
Fasting vratam is done on this day by married woman who fast from the time they wake up and break it only after the puja is completed. Karadai Nombu Adai is savoured along with butter as it makes it very appetizing. The fast in broken in the late afternoon or towards the evening It is believed that Savitri prepared this special dish and offered with butter to Lord Yama in gratitude for restoring her husband's life. at the time of offering the adai, mantras are chanted to Goddess Gowri. Kara Adai dish is otherwise known as Karadaiyan Nombu Adai. A small flower is tied to the yellow thread before it is worn around the neck to ensure their husbands' wellbeing. Women also decorate their houses with Rangolis.
Karadaiyan Nombu 2023: Prasadam
You can find two variations for the Karadai dish which is prepared and offered to Goddess Gowri as naivedhyam. One variety of Karadai is called Velladai wherein Vella means Jaggery and the other variety is called Uppu adai. Both are basically made of rice. Otherwise the menu for the day is highly delectable and elaborate.
Karadaiyan Nombu is observed with full gaiety and fervour not only in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu but also in foreign countries like USA, Canada, South Africa, Singapore and Malaysia by Tamilians residing there.
