Chaitra Month 2023: Date, Significance

Chaitra month (Vikram Samvat 2080 & Saka year 1944), also known as Chaitra maas is regarded as the first month in the Hindu Calendar and is the last month of the Bangla Calendar and is also called Choitro and means New Year.

There is a belief that Lord Brahma started the creation of the universe on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (on the first day of the bright or waxing phase of the moon in Chaitra Month). According to the English calendar, the month of Chaitra falls in the months of March or/and April. Devotees believe that doing religious and charitable works this month will fetch auspicious results.

Chaitra month holds immense significance in Hinduism. The traditional Hindu calendar is followed mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Chattisgarh.

According to religious beliefs, on the Pratipada date of Chaitra month, Lord Vishnu incarnated the first fish among his Dashavatars (10 avatars). Taking the form of a fish, he saved Manu who was surrounded by a deluge and brought him to a safe place. After this the communication of the new world took place. Along with this date, it is also believed that Lord Brahma started the creation of the universe on the Pratipada of the Chaitra month.

Chaitra Month 2023: List Of Vrats And Festivals

1. 8 March 2023 (Wednesday): Holi, Ishti, Dhulendi

The festival of Holika Dahan will be observed on Tuesday, March 7 and on 08 March, the festival of colours, Holi will be celebrated. This festival is also known as Dhulendi.

2. 9 March 2023 (Thursday): Bhai Dooj, Bhratri Dwitiya

Holi, Bhratri Dwitiya will be celebrated on the second day of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month. According to the Hindu calendar, Bhratri Dwitiya is celebrated every year after two days of Diwali and Holi festivals. All the festivals will be celebrated on the next day of Holi, that is 9 March 2023.

3. 11 March 2023 (Saturday): Bhalchandra Sankashti Chaturthi

There are two Chaturthi that is observed every month. Chaturthi Tithi has special significance in Hinduism. The Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha is called Sankashti Chaturthi. There is a law to worship Lord Ganesha on this day.

4. 12 March 2023 (Sunday): Rang Panchami

According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Rang Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month, which falls on the fifth day after Holi. The festival of Rang Panchami is also called Sripanchami and Dev Panchami. It is believed that the Gods and Goddesses too play colours on this day.

5. 14 March 2023 (Tuesday): Sheetala Saptami

The festival of Sheetala Saptami is celebrated on the seventh day of Holi in the month of Phalgun. On Sheetla Saptami, a special festival dedicated to Goddess Sheetala, who is worshipped by the devotees with full devotion. This year Sheetla Saptami is falling on 14 March.

6. 15 March 2023 (Wednesday): Sheetla Ashtami, Basoda, Meen Sankranti

Sheetla Ashtami will be celebrated with great pomp and show on 15 March, Wednesday and is quite popular in North India. On this day people worship Goddess Sheetala. He sought blessings for protection from all kinds of diseases.

7. 18 March 2023 (Saturday): Papamochini Ekadashi

People keep vrat on Papmochini Ekadashi and this year it will be observed on 18 March. By fasting on this Ekadashi, one gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that by observing this fast man gets freedom from his sins.

8. March 22, 2023 (Wednesday): Chaitra Navratri, Yugadi, Gudi Padwa, Chandra Darshan, Ishti

Chaitra Navratri will begin on 22 March 2023 and the Kalash will be placed on this day itself. In Maharashtra and Goa, people celebrate this day as Gudi Padwa. On the other hand, in South India, the arrival of the Hindu New Year is known as Ugadi.

9. 24 March 2023 (Friday): Matsya Jayanti, Gauri Puja, Gangaur

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati will worship on Gangaur Puja and this day is very popular among women. They worship on this day and seek blessings for increased fortune. Matsya Jayanti is celebrated on the third date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. The fish incarnation of Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day.

10. 25 March 2023 (Saturday): Lakshmi Panchami

The fifth day of Chaitra month is celebrated as Lakshmi Panchami. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity is worshipped on this day. Also, on 25 March, the festival of Lakshmi Panchami will be observed.

11. 27 March 2023 (Monday): Yamuna Chhath

Yamuna Chhath is celebrated on the Shashthi of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra month. Devotees believe that Goddess Yamuna was incarnated on the earth on this day and therefore, she is worshipped with all devotion on this day.

12. 30 March 2023 (Thursday): Ram Navami, Swaminarayan Jayanti

This year the festival of Ram Navami will be celebrated on 30 March 2023, Thursday. This day celebrates the birth anniversary of Lord Ram.

13. 6 April 2023 (Thursday): Hanuman Jayanti, Chaitra Purnima, Ishti

According to the Panchang, the festival of Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. Hanuman Jayanti will be celebrated on 6 April 2023. There is a lot of enthusiasm among the devotees regarding the celebration of this festival. They worship Bajrangbali with full devotion.
