The most famous Naga temple in that category, Kukke Subramanya temple is a place which you have to really see to believe. It is a pilgrimage centre of spiritual interest and is located in the Subramanya kshetra of Dakshin Kannada. The legends associated with this temple are something which are beyond our understanding but they are very authentic and genuine. Let us go into details about the magnificent aspects of this temple.

1. Kukke Subramanya is one among several holy places created by Parashurama, where the soil of the anthill is given as Mrittika prasad for the devotees. The mrittika prasad is widely known for its curative powers. Many a times, pregnant women apply it on their bellies to ensure there is no ontoward happening for their unborn baby. You will be relieved from Naga Dosha. Kukke pujas are known to bless with advancement in career, early marriage, infertility, etc.

2. Subramanya is located in the Sullya taluk of Dakshina Kannada. It was once called Kukke pattana.

3. It is also told that Adi Shankaracharya had halted here during one of his yatras.

4. At the entrance there is a Garuda pillar that is covered by Pure silver. As one enters the temple, it can be seen exactly between the sanctum and the entrance, and the pillar was placed here to protect devotees from the poisonous breath of Vasuki, who stays right inside the shrine.

5. The main shrine in the temple is built in kerala architectural style about 5000 years ago.

6. The temple is owned by Samputa Narasimha Subramanya Mutt. The early priests of the temple were of Moroja family, Sthanika Tulu Brahmins. Upto 1845 they served as chief priests and tantris of the temple but now the pujas are being conducted by Madhwas and a Madhwa Mutt has been built near the temple.

7. The temple is built on the banks of the Kumara Dhara river which originates from Kumara mountains. Devotees take a holy dip here before proceeding to the temple.

8. Timings or open hours of Kukke Subramanya Swamy Temple are between 5 AM to 9:30 PM followed by night meals and day rituals.

9. The noted ritualistic observances in Kukke kshetra are the Snana, Maha Rathotsava, Deepothsava, Ranga Pooja and Purusharya Ontinema.

10. You can see on the upper portion of the dais, the deity idol of Subramanya and the Deity of Vasuki below which at the next level, the deity of Sesha is installed. Kartikeya is worshipped as Subramanya here. It so happened, that, according to a legend, the serpents Vasuki and others took refuge with Lord Subramanya when Garuda threatened them.

11. Animal leather products are banned entry here.

12. One is not allowed to enter the temple premises if he has oiled his head or body.

13. Pregnant women beyond their sixth month are not allowed entry.

14. This temple located amidst the lovely western ghats is a popular trekking destination as well.

15. Kumara Dhara provides a beautiful backdrop to the temple, and the mountain of Sesha Parvatha is in the shape of a six headed Cobra surrounding the temple, and looks as though it is protecting it.

16. Kukke Subramanya is a widely sought after temple for its elaborate Naga Pujas that are done to alleviate Naga dosha. Ashlesha Bali Puja and Sarpa Samskara are predominant ritualistic observances
