Why Lord Ram Sentenced Lakshmana To Capital Punishment?
Yes, we all know about how Lord Ram died. But do you know how, his most loyal and supportive brother, Lakshman meet his end? You will be shocked to know that it was Lord Ram who ordered Lakshmana to be killed!
Indian mythology is a world of fascinating mysteries. Of all the scriptures, Ramayana and Mahabharata are the two most important and interesting scriptures which have been a matter of study for many scholars. Apart from the original texts, the oral traditions and folklores makes these epics all the more fascinating and the revelations about the characters can leave people in an awe.

Such is this particular story in which Lord Ram sentenced Lakshmana to capital punishment. It is extremely shocking for anyone who knows about Ramayana to believe that it was Lord Ram who loved His younger brother so much, was actually the person behind his death.
Read on to find out what were the events which led to this mishap and Lord Ram had to get Lakshmana punished in such a severe manner.
Vashishta's Insistence
After attaining victory over Ravana, Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya. He had to give up His wife, Sita to fulfill His duties as a king. One day, Lord Ram's guru, Vashishta came to meet Him. He insisted that they both talk in private and nobody should interrupt them.

A Severe Punishment
Since Vashishta insisted on complete privacy, Lord Ram ordered Lakshmana to guard the door. Anyone who enters the room without Lord Ram's permission would be given out capital punishment.

Durvasa's Arrival
As Lakshmana stood guard at the door, Rishi Durvasa arrived. Durvasa was known for his short temper and curses. He asked Lakshmana to tell Lord Ram that he had arrived and wished to meet him. Lakshmana tried to pacify him and requested him to wait. But Rishi Durvasa got extremely angry and threatened Lakshmana that if he was not allowed to meet Lord Ram the he would curse all the people of Ayodhya to die.

Lakshmana's Dilemma
On hearing Durvasa's words, Lakshmana was torn apart in the dilemma to interrupt Lord Ram's conversation and face death or to let Ayodhya suffer. So, he decided to sacrifice his life and entered Lord Ram's quarters. He informed Lord Ram of Rishi Durvasa's arrival. Lord Ram was heartbroken that Lakshmana had to suffer capital punishment.

Lakshmana's Sad Demise
Lord Ram was known for keeping his word. Therefore he had to follow his word and punish Lakshmana by taking away his life. Thus, Lakshmana was awarded capital punishment and that's how he met his end.
