Why Do Hindus Burn Their Dead?
The last rites of an individual is the concluding chapter of his worldly duties. The ways in which we grieve for the dead varies from culture to culture. Hindus burn their dead, Muslims and Christians bury and the Parsees have a very uncanny way of performing the last rites. They leave their dead in the tower of death where the vultures consume the corpse.
Whatever be the ritual, there is some reason attached to it for performing it in that way. For instance the burning of corpse in Hinduism has been a matter of fascination for people of other faiths. Hinduism has been unique in many senses including the last rites of a person.

An Important Samskara
Antim samskara or the last rite of an individual is of utmost importance because it is a pathway to the other world. This is the reason why the funeral rites are performed with utmost care.
The Next World
Hindus believe in the concept of the other world. They believe that after death, a person's soul moves on from this world to the other where the soul still continues to live, awaiting to be reborn. Hence, the funeral rites should be performed to liberate him/her from the mortal world.
The Idea Of Cremation
The idea behind cremation of the dead body is to liberate the soul from any kind of attachment with its previous body so that it can enter the world of souls and prepare to take birth again. So, by burning the body, all the ties from this birth are detached and the soul can depart to another world.
The Holy Fire
Fire is considered holy in Hinduism. It has the power to burn the body until nothing remains. On the contrary burying is a slow process in which the body takes time to dissolve into the basic five elements from which it has been created. So, by burning the body, the soul is easily and quickly liberated from its ties to this birth.
Thus, Hindus burn their dead to liberate them from the ties of the physical world and transport them to the next world where the soul continues to live, awaiting the time to be born again.
