Usually when we watch a horror movie, we often come across the shots of huge peepal trees with the hanging roots signifying the supernatural. However the reality and significance of peepal tree is completely different from that. There are a lot of myths and legends associated with the peepal tree which make it extremely significant in Hinduism.

According to the Puranas, once when the demons defeated the deities, Lord Vishnu took refuge in the peepal tree. Since, the Lord resided in the tree, it is of great importance to Hindus. It is seen as a means to worship Lord Vishnu. Some legends also suggests that Lord Vishnu was born under the peepal tree while some legends say that the tree signifies the trinity of Hindu religion. The root is supposed to represent Brahma, the trunk is Vishnu and the leaves represent Shiva.

According to Skanda Purana, if one does not have son, then the peepal tree can be regarded as the son of the family. As long as the tree lives, the family's name is said to continue. The tree is especially worshipped on Saturdays in the month of Shravan because it is believed that one who offers prayers at the time attains the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of wealth) and Lord Shani (Saturn).
