Osho -(From Mahavir's Life )On Recognising Spiritual Masters
Osho points out that one should have the natural urge for spirituality. The urge itself will lead one to the right master. He cites an example of a man who hopped from one master to another not being able to recognise their greatness owing to the lack of a real thirst in him.
A rich man visited ashrams of great spiritual masters like Ramana Maharshi, Swami Sivananda, Sri Aurobindo etc also visited Osho. He told Osho that he was unable to find anything satisfactory there and has approached him ultimately. Osho confronted him squarely and said that he will not be satisfied with him as well.
Osho explains that the man was rich and bored in life. He thus with an acquired interest for spirituality hopped from one master to another. Osho further reveals, that had he the true thirst for spirituality, he would have identified his spiritual master.
Osho, further narrates a short story/incidence from the life of Mahavir. It is said that people who were tuned to spirituality could feel the presence of Mahavira from a distance as far as even twenty four miles. They could trace Him to the place where He was, usually hiding from people in a cave or sitting under a tree. Such was the pull of Mahavir.
Some others who did not have the deep urge in them, found the naked Mahavir to be a mad man and drove him away or beat him.
Osho points out that a deep, natural urge to know the truth would help recognise spiritual masters and those without the urge are unable to recognise the truth beneath their sheaths of their physical and mental bodies.
